    Default Auto or five speed

My other Ranger needs a trans.
I got an AOD and NP203: both need a rebuild. About $1.000
got the chance to pick up a non electronic 5 speed and manual shift NP 205 for about $400
Id rather run an Auto but I’ve only ran a standard once.

    input ????

I've gone out of my way to purchase vehicles with manual transmissions instead of automatics for both commuting and wheeling. I'd go manual every time, if it were mine.

Ditto on the manual, just a preference. Having said that, my DD is automatic and I do like that better on the road. Are the NP203 / 205 stock?

What will be the use of the vehicle?

Depends on the use. Sitting in the ever growing bumper to bumper traffic in this metropolis, auto for sure. My preference has always been a for a standard as I like the control and active driving. I say this, but my p/u has an Allison automatic, though combined with the engine brake, gives me the downhill control I like and expect from a standard. Just sad it doesn’t sound like a Jake brake!

    89 ranger regular cab. 89 or 90 5.0 injected.
    80 F150 full width D44 front & 9 inch rear
mostly trail with some back & forth to work.
I don’t want it as a trailer queen. The ability to drive to and from the trail is a big thing.
Iv got the start in built thread “project wicked ways”

I've always been a manual guy. I first learned on a stick. That being said, I had an injured foot when I bought my 2012 Wrangler and choose the auto and I'll have to say that I love it. That year's -5-speed transmission is very easy to bump-shift and I way nicer to commute in. It positively crawls in 1st in 4LO.

A properly setup and functioning auto is way better than a stick in the rocks.

I completely agree, but properly setup is key. I have hated autos in the past, but on the vehicles I have no the autos are so well behaved, don't upshift even at rev limiter in low range sport mode, never upshift while pointing downhill, lockup the torque converter in all 6/8 gears. Past vehicles have not even locked up until 3rd gear which made them overheat, and immediately upshifted when you lifted the throttle going down a hill which wasn't ideal so my stick/auto vote depends on how well behaved the auto you are comparing against is.
