Default Planning overnight trip this week...

Louis and I were hoping to run Hayden and medano passes over 2 days with a night of camping this week...but looks like medano is still closed due to washout damage...anyone got suggestion for combing some trails into a 2 day trip with good camping? Many of the classic high passes that link together are not open yet....

Sounds like fun. I've been interested in hiking the lake from Kingston Peak since I first ran that trail. I haven't made the time to do it yet, though. Interested to hear your experience if you complete the hike.

Hey Trent, we ran Kingston and did the hike to James Peak Lake. Its about a mile out to the lake, with the first half mile very much downhill. There is a cool old cabin and some old mining stuff sitting around. We went quite leisurely and it took us about 1hr and 40 min all total. We did not do the hike over to Little Echo Lake - but that looks great! As we spent the night at Loch Lomond, there is some fun hiking up above the lake there up towards Reynolds, Ohman and Stuart Lake, as well as all the way up to Ice Lake.

    • The hike to James Peak Lake goes from here...its hard to see the lake as its straight up the valley. The 'hanging' lake to the right is Little Echo lake - I've never been there but its on the list for next time.

Its quite the hike down from the jeeps - you can just see them at the top of the hiking trail on the ridge.

Old(ish) mining cabin on the lake.

After doing the hike we continued along to the south - this trail is often very popular (this was a weekday) as it has a high alpine feel without being too difficult. We go off the end of the point there, and then down and around to the right up that valley to camp.

A couple of campsite pics on Loch Lomond - My friend Louis (has the 78bj40) and his son were in their 4runner set-up for overlanding with sleeping platform in the back. So I had the tent space all to myself. Despite some effort, no fish were threatened.

Just to prove the jeep did make the trip:

The lake is natural, but has been increased in size with some additional small dam work. A nice waterfall comes down into the lake on the upper end.

Above the waterfall are 3 more lakes, and then a 4th that is quite a bit more of a climb. Its called Ice Lake as supposedly sections of the lake always have ice (its well over 13,000' and in the shadow between James Pk and Mt Bancroft. I got up for an early morning hike up to the 3 lakes, but didn't make the last climb.
