A couple friends were in Durango for a family reunion and I joined them for a couple days*. One day was a combo 4x4 trip / train trip based in Silverton.
For the 4x4 portion we started in Silverton and traveled northeast up CR-2 towards Animas Forks (which is still blocked by landslide debris).
We turned up Minnie Gulch to the relic wooden buildings (Google Map link to 37.8628099, -107.5509431) as just beyond was a three to four foot avalanche snow blockage (that did have a couple tire tracks over it). A few side-by-sides came up but none tried traveling over. The green side-by-side was from a Sheriff Deputy out on patrol. He and the guide chatted for a bit - letting us know the Eureka townsite was now accessible - it had been closed off by another, much larger, landslide.
More pix to be added - once they're edited - but these'll set the tone - good snow still up in the mountains.
* thus Tom's recent trips didn't get an e-mail blast
Pix of the Minnie Gulch area - no specific snow pic but, standing on the snow, looking back gives some indication.
Pic of the large debris field with a fresh-ish dozer cut to the Eureka townsite (deep snow still about).
Pic of the Mild to Wild tour vehicle. The driver gave folks the option to have the top off.
