I think you should be fine Nate...the biggest issue is the rear hangover on the bed and how much you mind dragging the rear bumper when transitioning off the steep slickrock sections to the flat ground. The lack of lockers is not an issue as traction is really good on the slickrock (this is the first year I've had a locker in the cj - all previous trips where run open). Given the smaller size of the early Tacoma with 31s you should be fine...I've run quite a few of the easy to moderate trails in my 2010 Taco on 32s with no problem - but on the difficult trails its larger size with longer wheelbase definitely means some bumping and dragging, especially the rear bumper. I have a tow hitch just below the bumper that takes a lot of the abuse so I don't worry. I don't have any rocker protection on it and have never felt particularly exposed in Moab in that regard.

While possible, it sounds like this might be more trail than my kids will be up for if Fins & Hell's take 7-8 hours to run first. I'd be more inclined to skip Hell's Revenge and run Rainbow rather than try to hit all 3. If that's the plan, we could also go see Dellenbaugh Tunnel & Secret Spire, or some other trail out near Rainbow Terrace. Rainbow Terrace is a ~2 hour trail (Funtreks), and Dellenbaugh / Secret Spire are very short. All 3 of these are out northwest of Moab near Dubinky Well road, and it's best to hit as many as possible in one trip because it's a bit of a haul to get there.

I won't be, but I wanted to point out Sego Canyon and Book Cliffs, which are north of I-70 and easy to do either on your way into or out of town. Sego canyon contains some old mining buildings, and Book Cliffs is a nice meandering route with great views. We ran these last year on our way into Moab, and didn't bother to air down. It was a nice start to the trip.

My thought too - substitute Rainbow for Hells. Hitting others near Rainbow is fine.

I'm up for about anything / was just thinking of your post that family was interested in Rainbow.

Sounds like a plan then. Since it's just the two of us (so far) for Thursday, this should be fine. James and I ran Rainbow Terrace, Dellenbaugh & Secret Spire in 2017. Not sure if he's interested in running any of these again if he arrives on Thursday. The latter are very mild trails, which suited his Tacoma (his Jeep blew a radiator while he was towing it on that trip, so he wheeled the Taco).

I updated the calendar post. I'd like to publish a planned trail run post today, and will do so with the following trails if no arguments:

Thurs: Fins & Things, Rainbow Terrace, Dellenbaugh Tunnel & Secret Spire
Fri: Elephant Hill (National Part entrance & Day use permits required. Permits must be requested online 24 hrs in advance and groups limited to 3 vehicles, so we need to split up appropriately)
    Sat: Lockhart Canyon / Basin

I checked the trail book again for Lockhart Basin/Canyon. It wouldn't be possible to run both trails the same day this time of year, unless you camp there. Sunrise is 7:20am and sunset is 6:45pm. Lockhart Basin alone takes about 6 hours and it could take 2-3hrs to get to the trail head because you need to take 2 other trails to get there... This would be a very long day as is without Lockhart Canyon.

Fair point...I think we could discuss two options:
    1) drive all of Lockhart Basin from one end to the other - the northern end is near Moab and the southern end is near Needles. We would have to drive a lot of the same pavement that we do going to Needles for Elephant Hill.
    2) we could drive south from the northern terminus of lockhart basin, then take the turn west down lockhart canyon to the dead end at the river/overlook, and return the way we came back to northern end and moab. Using this option we would not drive the southern half of lockhart basin, and we would not have to repeat the the long pavement section from Needles to moab.

I am good either way...although I might prefer option 2? I also think (this is from a long time ago researching these trails) that the harder part of the 4wd trails is the northern end of lockhart basin.

I looked at the books too and am thinking a bit of an early start (8a moving) with a north to south travel, with the river overlook stop, would be possible - exiting the south end. The drive back on pavement would likely be after dark. I wish more research though as the FunTreks books talked about out-n-back times and we'd look (aside from the Colorado river viewpoint) at being through travel for both.

I am willing to give it a run...it will be a long day in the jeeps, which is fine with me - see what others think.

Stats: The TrailsOffroad GPX file for Lockhart Canyon has data points extending from highway 211 to the Colorado River viewpoint. Their track, one way, was 20.9 miles long and had a duration of 2h 25m. This includes a 25 minute stop out near the river - so 2 hours moving (one way).

The stretch of Lockhart Canyon between the river and the intersecting trail to the east was 5.4 miles and 56 minutes (one way). The 56 minutes includes the 25 minute stop near the river.

EDIT: I’ll try to get more trail stats later.

The southern half of the Lockhart Basin trail, which is also the easy access to Lockhart Canyon, should be significantly faster than the northern (and interesting) half of that trail. So... if we go north to south, by the time we get to the Lockhart Canyon turn, we'll know if there is enough time left for that round trip. At that point, we can possibly split into 2 groups if some want to run the canyon and some want to head back to Moab. i.e. we don't need to decide now. Does everyone agree that we want to run Lockhart Basin from north to south? That's what I would do.

Looks like you've picked a really great set of trails. We're heading into Moab thursday morning via Gateway / John Brown Canyon / Thompson Canyon / Onion Creek, and if all goes well we will try to cross paths at Dellanbaugh / Secret Spire that afternoon. We're taking our Xterra which is stock plus skids and good tires, so we're going to stick to easier stuff.

I'm good with about everything that is being said. But could someone just summarize what Thursday morning is going to look like? Time and place and trail etc. That would help my planning greatly
