Default 5/18 - Switzerland Trail North, Cliffhanger 2.0, Penn Gulch

Great turnout today for the Cliffhanger 2.0 / Pennsylvania Gulch double feature. I arrived 20 minutes before the planned meetup, and found 5 (?) of our group already present and ready to go. Everyone except UCFKnighter was ready to go by 10:15, and we rolled out. We took the interesting route including the steep hill climb and descent from our starting point to reach the base of Cliffhanger 2.0. While we were grouping up here, UCFKnighter caught up to us (we were not aware he was coming, since we did not see him at the meetup spot before we left). Everyone made it to the top, but not necessarily on the first attempts or their preferred routes. We gathered at the top, admired the views, and then departed due to the chilling wind.

We continued on to the Mt Alto Picnic Area, where we stopped for a leisurely lunch. After lunch, we headed to Pennsylvania Gulch. Penn Gulch is in good condition, though the tough section near the top seems to have eroded quite a bit from what I remember last year. There was no snow on the trail, but the trail was wet with actively flowing water. Everyone completed Pennsylvania Gulch with only minor damage. To my knowledge, the only casualty today was a dented wheel on HappyCamper's rig.

Had a good time. No pix, getting lazy. Good meeting a bunch of new people I have never wheeled with previously.
Thanks Trent for planning and leading!

Yes, they appeared to be steel. I didn't think to take any photos. Maybe HappyCamper will pop in here with a story or photo later. I think he dented a lip on the rim against a rock in the upper half of Pennsylvania Gulch. I noticed when we stopped to wait for the folks behind us that he was stopped up against a rock, and it seems likely that's what got him when we started rolling again.

I had a blast and hopefully my friend James will join the group also. On the way back to Denver he mentioned it was fun going out with a group like that. Something he'd not done previously even though he has wheeled quite a bit. My rover did pretty well once I got the dust shield off of my brake rotor and the screeching noise stopped. I had a couple of clunks from my rear tires grabbing a bit of wheel well but no damage that I can see at this time. I was frustrated I could not get lined up and get around that corner on the right line of Cliffhanger 2.0 where the holes were. Oh well maybe next time. Thanks for all who came out it was a great time.

4x4's gather in their natural habitat.

Some Jeeps peeking over one of my favorite spots towards the beginning.

Great views along most of the trails.

Some of the group by the old general store fireplace smokestack.

    Beautiful skies over the group!

View after (correct me if I'm wrong) Cliffhanger 2.0

You have it right. The only two places we passed with good views are the top of the first steep climb and descent, and Cliffhanger 2.0.

    Thanks for the photos.

About halfway up Pennsylvania I had to stop and let Trent get some distance between us. When I stopped I slid left and rested my drivers rear against a boulder that was about two thirds as tall as my wheel. When I pulled out I felt it push off of the boulder. I was worried for a few seconds that the tire may have popped off the bead but it held in. It bent two places on the outer lip. Ill see if it shimmies on the way to work this morning. The only spot that really gave me any trouble was just above that. There are tho roots the first on the left and second on right about 100 inches apart. Someone has dug out below them with big tires. I had to back up and climb the left bank to get over the first one. I climbed right over the second one with my drivers front in the air as the right rear dropped in the hole
