You will be fighting the suspension on the still-connected side if you only remove one sway bar link at a time. You need to remove both to have free movement of the sway bar. No amount of lubricating the bushings is going to help while it is still connected to the shock and spring (and 4000 lbs of Jeep) on one end.
It is an easy thing to forget when you are doing this the first time, which is why I asked.
