    Default 14 bolt carnage

Snapped an axle shaft and destroyed a locker in my 14 bolt.

Down on Indy/Penrose this weekend? I like the 2nd picture and the shaft looks to have twisted off what I assume is the flange (sorry don't know the specific name) that the ring gear bolts to?

How hard were you pressing on the gas pedal? I'm assuming you weren't "hopping" and were at near standstill - pressing gas slowly-more-more-more-BANG. Did you feel like you were "getting close" to breaking something or was it "that's not what I expected"?

    Front or rear???

    What size tires?

You have welded/spool in the rear or a locker?

    Axle cost - 1 to 2 hundred?

    Locker - cha-ching

14bolts....not many options for lockers.... generally trash them when a shaft is busted.
D70 bigger shafts, better gear and locker options!

14bolt does get the pinion support bearing, wish AAM would have kept that!

Nice Carnage. Hope you get it back up and running soon

Yep, it was on the exit to Patriot. That's the flange that bolts to the hub, it's a full float axle.

I wasn't getting on it very hard at all really. I think it may have been stressed and/or damaged previously and it finally broke. I was bouncing a little but again not that much. It was totally unexpected and didn't even make that loud of a noise.

Rear axle on my buggy running 42" stickies. Detroit locker that is grenaded in the pictures.

New (junkyard) shafts should be less than $150. Likely replacing with Grizzly locker, $435.

It's debatable which is actually stronger. I'd just upgrade to 40 spline shafts in this axle before replacing the entire axle. But then I might break something further down the line like an output shaft of the atlas.

Right.....the Yukon was to fix the granade issues when a shaft gets busted

I am also considering a spool but I have cutting brakes that I'd like to keep functional.

    WELL DONE!
I think that's the first 14-bolt I've seen break except on a much heavier rig... Any evidence of bearing failure?

Sounds like the grizzly it is.
I liked the unit I put in the TJ.
Has a bit more take up in it than I like for a manual transmission, but the Detroit did as well so for a locker that is not to grenade when a shaft blows....they got my money!
Nice unit good machining from what I could see without openning it!

Been a spell to see a 14 snapped shaft.
But you got some meats in the machine of yours!

Not that I have noticed yet but I'll be checking everything real well as it goes back together.

Locker has been installed in the carrier. I couldn't find any replacement shafts locally in the junkyards so I ordered some on eBay from UT, they arrived today. Should have it all back together this weekend.

Less that 2 hours so far, a 14 bolt comes apart very easy. I did spend a few hours walking around and pulling shafts at junkyards to no avail.

Locker ended up costing $408, spent another $65 for a lifetime warranty on it. Shafts cost me $250 but now I have a full extra set.

Found that the hub on the side that broke was loose, both spindle nuts were actually cracked. I think since the hub was loose it was allowing the shaft to bend and eventually break.

Would welding repair it - or is it a replace route?
