Interesting, thanks for sharing.
The Salton Sea areas is a great place to wheel. 5 miles to the west is a place called Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. One of the greatest places to off-road. 85,000 acres of desert, wadis, and rough terrain with the ability to go anywhere in any direction (i.e. no trail restrictions).
Word of warning if you head to the Sea. Don't get within 200 yards of the shore or this will happen. As long as you are moving with good speed you will float on the surface. Once you slow down you will sink to the frame. The entire areas is crystalized. As the water receded, the salt evaporated leaving the ground full of micro air pockets. Easy to walk on, but the weight of a vehicle will compress it.

LOLOL - `that your son? Who was driving?
Years back on a motorcycle trip I did some beach riding near Eureka CA. The whole time I was thinking two thoughts - COOL!!! and DO NOT GET STUCK. That evening I stayed with a local who informed me that I was lucky I didn't get stuck and have to deal with the rising tide. Good times - but not again without being prepared.
