    Default Rollins Pass West Sept 22, 2018

    I didn't see a trail run report for this yet, so here's a starter.

    Tom and Jim met up early on the eastern side of Rocky Mountain National park, and met up with the rest of the group before 10:45 in Winter Park. We were rolling by 11:15 with six rigs. By my count, we had Jim, Tom, Corey, Jackie, Chuck, and Trent.

    The road (Corona Rd or Corona Pass Rd?) was a bumpy 2WD route up to the near side of the old, out of service train trestles. At the parking lot, there is a bypass to get to the far side of the trestles on a much more rugged road (Wells calls this the old wagon road). This route did not require 4WD, but the ride was considerably more comfortable in 4-LO. We encountered several hikers, cyclists, and a group of side-by-sides while we were exploring this spur. We parked at the end of the spur to hike to the old (closed) train tunnel, and then back over to see the old train trestles. The trestles appear to be open to hikers, but definitely closed to motor vehicles. There is a gas pipeline routed along the trestles, so I imagine they are at least minimally maintained to ensure the pipeline does not break.

    The weather yesterday was great, though the trail was quite dry and dusty. Another good day with FR4x4.

    Back to internet..Yesterday was another great time with the group! I let one of my buddies tag along and he even mentioned how cool those guys and galls are. We ended up camping that night and we found a spot it was TRASHED! Sota and beer cans everywhere. (makes me sad) Needless to say we cleaned it up and left it way better then we found it. Tell next time!

    Processing my video. Got most of the trail down on it.

    A big thanks to Jim for planning this. I had a great time!

    Note to self: Avoid RMNP during the rutt on a free day and a big event in Estes.

    YOU KNOW IT !!!

    But now for the numbers via the track log (granted I left via Fall River exit, which I thought would be quicker, but the meadow was choked with more gawkers)
    Morning trip through the park - Beaver Meadows to west exit 1h 18m;
    Evening trip through the park - west entrance to Fall River exit 1h 26m.

    But it FELT like 30 minutes longer.

    `tis rare to make use of the few passing zones in the park but when a pickup is rolling 15 mph under the limit, not making use of pull-outs, multi-car pass here we go.

    Tom - how was traffic in downtown Estes? I went Fall River to avoid it and was amazed at all of the curbside parking on US-34 near the visitor center where cars aren't normally seen.

    edit: but I'm still happy to take the slow and scenic routes and avoid 70 & 25.

    I also visited the curiosity of Larimer County road 22h. It was closed after the flood and on the way back to FoCo I checked to see if it had opened - it is!! (it could have been closed permanently). 22h is a two-way, one lane, with blind corners, shelf road with no guard rail with 40' drop... It's short but does make a wonderful short-cut route between The Dam Store and Masonville / FoCo (Google map)

    There were more elk just below the beaver meadows entrance and then more after the visitors center. Apparently the new way to view elk since the signs state to park in pullout is to stop in the middle of the paved road and get out the view them when there is no pullout. Estes itself wasn’t bad.
