Default Rollins Pass WEST - sometime late September???

EDIT: This won't take place the weekend of the cleanup run - it'll be scheduled around the fall cleanup

    ====

Rollins Pass West is on my ToDo list. I'm thinking sometime late Sept / Early Oct. I don't know when snow risk might happen but it's coming close.

    Interest?

    Thoughts as to when?

`won't be the 8th - Tom and I are checking out Argentine & McClellan spurs!

This will play second fiddle to fall cleanup. Once that date is set I'm certain the date for this will be easy to decide upon.

Rollins Pass West is car easy, there is only a little section of "trail" at the top that IMO if you take it you miss the best part of the hike, crossing the trestles.

The entire thing e to w including the closed tunnel was always 2wd when it was open. We did family trips across it when I was growing up. Station wagon iirc.

Actually the best part is cross country skiing over them from Eldora to Winter Park. Think it was in Feb, 1980.

I let it sit for a day to see if any comment might stir - the 22nd it shall be.

Next - where to meet / when.

I'm thinking I might pay for a RMNP day pass to jump over at that spot vs heading down to I70 or up to CO14. Tom - do you have a route in mind that you'd take? If via RMNP perhaps we could meet at the Beaver Meadows visitor center parking lot. Cell coverage and public restroom and ample free parking should be available. Perhaps 8:30 there (if that even works as a spot).

If others from south of Longmont wish to join they could arrange meet spot if they wished or we could simply plan to meet at the trailhead / Winter Park area by around 10:30/11a.

    Let's firm it up.

I was thinking it may be fun to do it via Trail Ridge Road in RMNP. Location and time are good with me.

Could drive up old fall river road to make the first part of the drive a little more interesting?

I could do Fall River though I did it a couple weekends ago and it reinforced my experienced from the prior time - slow people DO NOT USE THE TURNOUTS. We plodded along the whole thing at 7 to 14 MPH (I think we had 14 cars piled up behind the slow poke).

(edit - cut out much to distill to the needed bits)

If the only folks going are all in one group via RMNP it really doesn't matter if one way takes longer to get to the trailhead. If there are two groups (one via I-70), the fall river variable might be a consideration. I'm game for Fall River Road - with the note that we might be late if caught behind someone.

This is me, my wife and our dog Java (15 years, 8 months and 9 days old today) in our Subaru a few years ago. The hike is out of order, you go over the trestles to reach the tunnel. The first one is for trailsoffroad, I changed the music to just a loop so they can monetize it. The second one is the original on an old vimeo account where they don't care about copyrights. The song is Trains by Porcupine Tree.

    Fantastic vids Paul!!

    Thanks for stick'n then up!

A question for those joining - should we move forward the time 30 or 60 minutes to allow for some walkabout time? I do see driving up-n-over the "new" trail (501) that joins the original route between the Needle's Eye Tunnel and the Trestles - parking above Yankee Doodle Lake - walking back and forth over the trestles and optionally to the Needle's Eye Tunnel (been there from the east side - could walk to it again or I could pass - depending upon time).
