Default Up the Poudre... Green Ridge Trail

    https://funtreks.com/off-road-trails/green-ridge-trail/

Green Ridge Trail is a "yet to visit" trail on my list. I'm thinking Saturday but Sunday is a low possibility option. Weather looks good. Any interest?

This trail is a fair distance up the Poudre valley - CO Hwy 14 northwest of Fort Collins.

I still want to run the "Mud Loop" up there, which includes the Green Ridge trail. I could possibly go Sunday but Saturday looks like the wife has me hanging out with her

Would this be part of what some here called the mud loop? I think we started near Rustic and ran Sevenmile north to and through Bald Mt, but called it a day after Bald Mt and headed home last year via washboarded Deadman Road? This would be the section that headed back south towards hwy 14?

Yep - the final part of the mud loop. that generally connects Deadman down to Hwy 14

I should think that the trail would be fairly dry as it's late in the season, so hopefully it would not be filled with mud - but who knows...

Oh sweet, it's open! I wouldn't mind running that, though I may break off at the end to try and catch some tiger trout. I was headed that way to camp and got stopped at the gate, we ended up going along the Laramie river.

Basically it's boring. Most of the trail traverses through dense "dog hair" forest so it is not scenic at all. Most of the trail is very rocky, big enough rocks to make you go slow but not big enough to be fun. Then there is the stinky mud holes, most are optional but you do have to go through a few and man do they stink! Overall it is a long bumpy boring ride.

    Thanks.

So, then, this'll likely be a trail I'll do.... once. But I still have to do it.

It may have changed since I ran it, it's been like 8 years, but I doubt it. It's worth running once, maybe you'll like it.

More fun in the early season (IMHO) when its nice and swampy. Used to run winching tutorials there as there were plenty of places to get good and stuck. In the fall I'd only go there for hunting access as it is pretty hum-drum trail when dry.

Look'n to see if there is firm interest. Matt, would you wish to go on Sunday? If not, no worries, I could see putting this off until the muddy spring time. Anyone jump up if there's a firm yes otherwise I'll schedule time somewhere else this weekend.

I can't commit to Sunday at this point Jim, I replaced my upper rear control arm joint and having trouble getting the bolt lined up to secure the new joint. I should be able to get it fixed by Sunday but not 100% sure I can even get to it by then. I'll post up later tomorrow if I'm able to get out at all but I don't think I want to drive all the way to Green Ridge ;-/

K - thx. I'm thinking of maybe doing an overnight near dinosaur - car vs. jeep is my q.

Best of luck with getting the bolt lined up.

Green Ridge perhaps this next late spring...

I am interested to get out this weekend, but not sure GRT or sat would be my first choices. Although I might consider taking taking the Taco - especially if it was on saturday. I started chasing a long running little electrical gremlin on the jeep (my reverse lights are temperamental), and while I think I found the issue, I ended up removing and ordering a new part, that while not critical for operation, does have some wires and pieces that are unattended and might not be good to get covered in mud, water etc.

Just a cautionary note, maybe this year was different than the norm, but GRT has been closed most of the summer until quite recently. I don't recall the last time I'd checked previously, but it was probably about a month ago, max.

My point is, it may not be open next spring. Or it may. I have no clue.

One of the items tossing about my mind are some trails on the west side of RMNP (west of Grand Lake - FunTreks.com has some listed - moderates). I have a desire to re-visit Lake Irene at RMNP - it's the first pull off just down from Milner Pass and take a few photos. (google map).

    Thx - link updated.

    Interesting tidbit regarding Lake Irene...

Some friends from Chicago area visited recently. The four of them walked the southeast / alternate trail along the lake while I walked the northwest / main trail along the lake. At the low end of the lake are some pine trees. All of us were stunned when we cleared the trees to find a LARGE elk between us. I yelled - TOO CLOSE to the others for us to retreat (my estimate, using Google Earth measurement, has me about 30 feet and them about 45 feet). One of the friends was able to snap one quick pic. I wish to go back and get gps locations / measure distances - for kicks.
