    Default Argentine Pass and McLellan

A FR4x4 crew ascended Argentine Pass and McLellan today. Meetup in Georgetown went well, and we picked up an extra rig operated by Zach, who Matt invited along. We aired down and disconnected sway bars at the Georgetown Visitor's center, and were on the road up to the trailhead around 9:20. Today's crew consisted of Noah, Matt, Chris, Zach, and Trent, along with their various passengers.

Our day started slowly, as a police vehicle was blocking the paved road a few hundred yards from the trail head. There was a downhill skate boarding competition coming down Guanella Pass that ended at the air-down areas next to the trail head, and the police were only allowing traffic between race heats. After a 20 minute delay, we were able to enter the trail, though the entrance was mostly blocked by spectators and hay bales (safety barriers for the racers).

The first portion of the ascent, from the trail head to the mine, was uneventful. Some of the aspen leaves in this section of the trail were showing yellow leaves, and a small number had already fallen to the ground. Fall leaf colors will be here very soon.

We stopped for lunch at the top of the mine, near the junction for Argentine and McLellan ascents. After the break, we ascended Argentine pass. We passed a descending ATV and UTV on our ascent, but otherwise encountered no one. Partly cloudy skies at the summit yielded some spectacular views, though it was a bit chilly. We descended after a brief stop to view, photograph, and talk at the top.

Back at the mine, Chris departed for the day, and the four remaining rigs plotted a route up McLellan. We ascended the steep, rocky, loose route from the mine up towards the McLellan peak. The trip up was uneventful. We did find several mountain goats near the summit, and enjoyed even more impressive views of the area from the top of McLellan that we found at the top of Argentine. Another group of three Jeeps could be seen ascending the shelf road up McLellan, so we loitered for a while to allow them to clear the trail before beginning the descent.

While we waited for the Jeeps to clear the shelf section, we noted a helicopter flying through the valley towards Argentine pass. It was brightly colored orange or red, and may have been a medical emergency helicopter. We later heard rumors of a rescue crew of 4x4 vehicles headed up towards Argentine while we were descending McLellan. We have no idea what prompted those activities today.

We descended McLellan via a different route that took us to the trail split for the river section. At this point, Noah and Matt split off to attempt the river route, while Zach and I returned via the quicker (and easier) trail we took uphill in the morning.

The forecast for rain and potential storms fortunately was inaccurate today, and we had altogether good weather for the trail run.

Thanks everyone for coming out today.

Great day today, amazing views and fun trails! Noah and I loved the river route, water was pretty low so all the crossing were easy by a few were rocky and fun. The rock gardens definitely made it a slow going return but well worth the extra bumping
Thanks to everyone who came out today!

There are many trails I have not yet explored. Of the ones I have visited, Argentine pass has offered the most impressive views. Well worth a day trip, in my opinion.

Had a great time, what a great area to explore. Nice seeing Trent again again and meeting some awesome new people. Already can't wait to get back.

Here are a few of my pics, mostly duplicates of ones already posted.

Just before reaching the mine where we stopped for lunch, there is a cabin on the low side of the trail. I've wondered what that is since passing it last year. I found it online as a rental cabin. Looks interesting, though I imagine most here would prefer to camp in a tent.

Hmm, interesting. That cabin looked like it was really nice. Wouldn't be a bad home base for a weekend.

Awesome posts guy’s! I had a blast! sorry I had to bail on the second half but my schedule is so hectic right now. It was great to meet everyone and also to hang with Trent and Matt again. Noah, your 4Runner is awesome we gotta go wheeling again soon. On the way out I got to watch 20 minutes of downhill skateboarding my son loved it lol.
