    Default MV-50 Underhood Mount

Decided to move my compressor to a hard mount under the hood. It's a PITA to take out and put away each time, and this weekend I used it and I thought I had waited long enough for it to cool down but I was wrong, it melted a small hole in the carrying bag. I could smell something in the vehicle so I found it pretty quickly, luckily I didn't set anything on fire. I googled it and a lot of people have them under the hood, the engine heat doesn't seem to be an issue with MV-50s. IDK, I guess I'll find out...

I made a small bracket and used two existing holes in the fender to mount the bracket that holds two corners of the pump and a third corner just bolted straight through. Each corner has a rubber foot that pops out leaving a good 1/4" or so mounting hole that I used for this. I could have drilled for the fourth corner but it was really good with just three and the fourth still has the rubber foot which is firmly planted on the fender. I cable tied the fuse to the handle to make it easy to get to, ran the wires to the otherside with some shielding and clamped the ends to the hood support. I put some electrical tape on the hood support to prevent them from scratching the paint. It works well in a short test so far and cost $0.00, which is always nice.

There is an open bracket under the master cylinder that I saw used as well for compressors in a lot of threads, but I have a spare serpentine belt cable tied there already and I like the higher spot better. I did consider it though, maybe for a smaller compressor. Has anyone else mounted this one?

That's where by buddy mounted the compressor in his TJ, and the same spot I have eyeballed for doing the same on my LJ. You can also cut the ends off your compressor battery cables and install some battery terminal clamps to permanently wire it in.

You'll enjoy not having to pull it out and pack it up. I don't see engine heat being an issue.

On the bar you have the power clamps attached - at the front end by the radiator - what do you have zip tied to the bar?

I just bought this smittybuilt compressor do you think I could do the same with this? Are they water resistant enough?

I guess you can mount any compressor. They are not inherently water resistant as I see it, but most electrical stuff can get wet and as long as it's dry before you use it, will be OK. The engine heat should help with that, and I think the location is pretty good for staying out of the water on deep crossings. You can see in the pics I have a cover over the air outlet to prevent stuff from getting in. I am considering an aluminium splash shield, there is an obvious place to mount one and it might be a good idea, IDK yet. I am thinking of hard wiring it like Trent said, but then I have to remember to shut it off which I might not do with the engine running, and if it gets soaked it might short out. Maybe hardwired with a switch on the positive side...

Jim those are hose repair inserts and clamps that match my heater lines. I replaced all my other hoses even though they were working and carry the good used ones as spares, but they sent me the wrong heater hoses and I never corrected it so I have those. Those are easy to bypass anyway, and nonessential.

Looks like I just picked up another project for the week. I am going to add a switch also.

Id recommend using a switch to throw a relay. Those pull more than lots of switches can handle.
