Just to confirm, I was specifically thinking the last little parking area past the campgrounds and just before the gate keeper to air down and lock in.

    1) I've never been to this trail. Is the parking area you mention obvious?
    2) Lock-in? Implying lockers are required for this trail?

Easy - just turn off hwy 72 (peak to peak) at peaceful valley and drive a mile or so west past a campground or two, to the end of the normal road.

Lock-in is an old term for those of us who still have manual locking front hubs. Even if I shift my transfer case into 4wd, I still have to get out and 'lock-in' the front hubs otherwise the axle will turn but is not attached to the wheel/spindle hub. On most newer 4x4s (like your LJ), the hub locks in automatically when you shift into 4wd. No (differential) lockers needed for this trail.

Ah, got it. I've heard of manual locking hubs, but never driven a vehicle with them, nor used them. Thanks for the clarification.

Agreed but I have seen someone with lockers spin all four for awhile on this trail. That said its all about the line.

I expect I will stop for gas and coffee in Nederland around 8am. Usually at the cafe next to the chamber of commerce - I think its called New Moon Bakery. Out of there by 8:30 and to trailhead by 9am.

I should be there, may have a passenger. Probably leaving Bruce at home. This will be my "shakedown run" for the lift, but I am really not expecting any issues at all, it was just springs and shocks and I re-torqued everything.

Any idea how high the crossings are now? I don't want to flood my diffs or transfer case (again).

I did this a day or two after it opened early this summer and the water crossings were low.... frequent but not deep. In fact the big crossing at Coney Flats was as low or lower than it was late last year - due to the super dry winter we had.

Chris, Ill run this with you anytime since it’s very close to my house and it’s definitely fun!

    Noah,

Depends on how high the water is and how high your stock breathers are. Worst case, you can change the fluid when you get home. Not a bad habit to get into when running through water regardless.

I do not know the current water level.

I went looking for my breathers last night. Pretty sure the transfer case and rear diff breathers are above the bottom of body tub by a few inches. Haven't found transmission or front diff breather yet (looking tonight). Still no idea how / when I got water in the transfer case before =\

I am not 100% sure of this, but I think a lot of modern breather valves are one way - the open to release pressure as things heat up. When stuff cools down, they close off and you get negative pressure (well its positive but less pressure inside the axle than outside air). Generally this is okay as things heat back up and build pressure again when being used. And, of course, and 1-way breather valve can fail or be gummed up with mud and dirt - but if the axle is hot it should be okay if you are not submerged long enough for things to cool and begin to reduce pressure. In other words, don't park in the deep water.

There are two-way valves as well - such as mine - and I do a lot of water crossings without issue. I do try to change my fluids at the end of any wheeling season where I know I have done some deeper crossing - and I have never found any significant water indicators.

Another point - if the breather valve is plugged or not operating properly, then air pressure differences may begin to force air around other seals and begin to cause fluid leaks etc. Plus, if those leaky seals are lower/closer to the ground, then they have the potential to be below waterline for shallow crossings where the breather might normally be above the water level.

In this hobby, frequent fluid changes and maintenance is often done based on where you have been, and in preparation for where you will be going, as opposed to how far you have driven. That being said, I am much less dedicated to my toyota maintenance than the old cj. New 4x4s are generally pretty impressive in all aspects of reliability, capability, durability with minimal maintenance in the big picture.
