Default Ouray - First weekend in August

Just throwin' this out there a couple of days early. OK 183 days early to be more specific.

David (JandDGreens) and I are planning to run some of the Alpine loop as well as some of the trails from Jeep's Badge of Honor program.

First day, Friday August 3rd, Lake City (Staying at the North Face Lodge)
Saturday and Sunday will be out of Ouray (Staying at the Ouray Chalet Inn)

Black Bear, Imogene, Poughkeepsie, Ophir, Engineer are at the top of my list.
edit: I thought Engineer pass would be closed already but it looks like that's not the case. BONUS!

Plenty of time to make it happen.
Come get some badges with us while experiencing truly phenomenal scenery!

    Ouray Colorado August 3-6, 2018

This trip has been on my bucket list ever since Jan and I went down to Ouray a few summers ago. Jan hates heights and will be staying home for this one. I hope my XJ holds together for the summer so that everything works out. The reason we are getting the ball rolling and have set the date for this weekend is because it is prime season down there and if anyone needs to book motel rooms they will want to act ASAP because the rates are reasonable early but not so much the closer it gets. (When we did our trip to Durango last year in mid July. We wanted to wing the first night on the way down, I really wanted to stay in Ouray but at $200 plus per night vs. $125 planning ahead so we decided to stay in Montrose and then spend some time hiking Box Canyon and lunch in Ouray before heading the rest of the way down).

When we were down in Ouray we stayed at the Matterhorn Inn the rates were reasonable, they offer the choice of a continental breakfast or a coupon for a breakfast at a nice little deli on Main Street and it is with in walking distance of Main Street. Which is nice as walking the town is way better than finding parking in all the hoopla.
    Actually this is from one of the sites;
(I am not aware of any closures listed and Engineer pass is one of the main parts of the Alpine Loop)

    This is for EngineerPass
Closure: Natural - Closed by heavy snows
Best Time: July - Late after spring snow melt
    August - Best
    September - Best
October - Early snows may block the upper section
    Trail Heads
    Accessed:
    Bear Creek - Hiking trail.
    Henson Creek - Hiking trail.
Alpine Gulch BLM3301T - Horseback, Hiking trail.
    BLM3140T - Horseback, Hiking trail.
Camping: There are dispersed sites at the very eastern end of Engineer Pass near Lake City.

Engineer pass is going to be the first and only run for Friday when we get down there we will be driving a long ways Friday morning and I figure I will be making camp (car camping) near Lake City so as to met-up Saturday to run the rest of the Alpine Loop (weather permitting) I’ll be finding somewhere to camp near Ouray for Saturday/Sunday night. Would like to do another trail on Sunday (Black Bear or Poughkeepsie Gulch) I know Black Bear is on a lot of peoples bucket list but I will have to see how I do on all the other shelf roads before I commit to that one!!! Poughkeesie Gulch will require the use of the winch for me but the rest of the trail is pretty tame and very scenic from all the videos I have watched Then depending on the weather get cleaned upand relax some Sunday at the pool in Ouray for the afternoon before finding another place to car camp for Sunday night. I will be heading back to Denver Monday Morning.

When things are getting closer to August we will be getting things set-up in a little more detail.

Always wanted to get to Ouray. I know David and I had talked about it last year. Only one problem, those are Jeep badges ,I don't own a Jeep so I can't get any badges ... Just kidding. Like David, lets see if my "little" 4runner holds together long enough, however I would really be interested in that.

TJ it would be great if you can make the trip. To be honest I am more interested in getting to see the scenery of all the mining camps and towns in the area. Ouray has become my all time favorite little town in all of Colorado.

Absolutely agree. I'm not all about hard trails. One of my favorites is that pass behind Jefferson just because of the views.

I have to work on the front end of my 3rd gen before any commitment. At 55mph sounds like it's coming apart, but I hopefully know what it is.

Would really like to attend this one!

Another option I was considering is selling the 3rd gen and getting a 96ish land cruiser with the elocke rz.

I like the land cruiser option. If my xj camper wasn't going to look so cool behind my rig I would get me a newer Tacoma

I'm hoping to do the Alpine Loop around that time beginning on the Lake City side. We'd be interested in running Engineer with you on Friday, I'm going to watch this thread.

We are running Engineer from out side Ouray when we first arrive in the area to get that part of the loop out of the way, as I have read it is best to allow 2 days to run the entire loop, then stay in or around Lake City and then met up with who ever is planning on doing the whole rest of the loop on Saturday. (Hopfully completing the loop on Saturday ending up near Ouray

I misread it, we're staying in Gunnison the first night and starting from Lake City the next morning, hoping to do the loop in a day w/o dropping into Ouray... if we don't coordinate I'll just keep an eye out for an XJ and a half on the trails!

loop is totally doable in a day.

Yeah probably is doable in one day, but not if you want to stop for photos and take our time, I figure getting the first leg in on Friday and find a campsite will be enough after a four-five hour drive getting there.

Hope to run into you Paul but I only plan on my XJ. Still have a lot of work to do on the trailer.

It's a long way off but I'd like to put myself down a a maybe. My family used to have a house in Ouray, I have been on all of the trails mentioned. However, I never got to DRIVE them! I would looove to go back, this is a great area! I still remember the major pucker riding in an old FJ40 with no top or doors on Black Bear, man that was fun! I might be able to convince my step dad to finally get his land cruiser up and running for this too, it's been out of commission for way to long!

Just wanted to clearify one thing. We will be starting the Alpine loop on our first day. It starts just out side Ouray, I miss spoke We will be doing Mineral creek too Engineer pass for the afternoon on Friday. (Of course weather may dictate some of our plans)There is disperresed camping when we arrive closer to Lake city. This is so that those who want to get a place in Lake city rather than camping can for the night and can met-up with everyone who wants to do the rest of the alpine loop on Saturday ending back in the Ouray area (which is a fantastic little town to hang out for the rest of Saturday). I plan on camping near Ouray for the next two nights so again Ouray will be a great place to find lodging for those who want to. Then Sunday I would like to tackle Black Bear pass (this is if I still have the nerve!). It would be nice if we have enough going to have alternate trail for those who would rather do an easier tral. Monday is the day I plan on heading home.

Note; this is going to be prime time in this area and that is why we wanted to plan early, becuase if you are sure you want to go, now is the time to book your stays in Lake city and Ouray. Because the area books up early and booking early would save you money. In lake city there is a KOA style camp ground that offers shower to those who disperss camp for $8 one reason I wanted to take this route. And in Ouray you can always take time out to visit the hot springs pool during the rest of the week end to relax and freshen up. Cost a little more but it is a very nice pool (about 4 pool types to choose from).

No way I could talk my girls into camping outside so that's why I booked early for those days.
I'll be headed back on Monday as well. I'm anxious to see and wheel this area!
