Default new off-road pop up camper!

so we've been looking at getting a sweet off-road teardrop trailer for a while now and decking it all out to be towed all over the trails. but after a lot of talking and checking ourselves, we realize that we will probably never actually take a trailer like that on the Rubicon or over the trails in Moab for any reason. so we pulled the trigger on a new "off-road" pop up camper instead!

it's an 8-foot box with TONS of clearance in the rear. 30" mud tires will be getting replaced with stock JK Rubi wheels and 32s to match our Jeep. it's pretty sturdy in construction and obviously rugged looking (the wife likes that). I've crawled around under it and I can see a few obvious things that I will eventually remedy, but not after taking it out and using a bunch first. with kids, this is going to be much more comfy than a teardrop/RTT setup and will go pretty much anywhere we would actually end up taking a trailer. this weekend is our first voyage (out of the yard, haha) with it.

anyone else have a pop up they take out and play with?

also, we're heading to Salida/Buena Vista to camp...anyone have any favorite spots that are sort of off-grid? we don't need to go to an RV park...would actually like to avoid it if possible. gotta use this thing like it's intended!

Camping anywhere in the fourmile area above and east of BV is always where I stay when kayaking on the Ark River. Free and scenic - no facilities of course.

Have a popup that we camp in, but I don't get it on much more than just a forest service road. Even doing that I've gotten it into some places I wish I'd never tried and wondered if I was going to get it back out.

Sweet camper, hope you get plenty of use out of it. Are you planning on doing any trails while your in the area? (Tin-cup, Hancock Pass?) I like it down that way.

I don't know if we'll do any trails, really. we're just out to break in the camper, probably staying only one night.

Sweet trailer. My wife will be jealous. What's the wet weight of one like that?

There are several ideal spots just above st elmo on tincup pass road. Might require 4 low pulling a trailer. I believe it requires an ohv sticker to.

Toward Salida is a road to the Tabquache Pk trailhead. Lots of camping up that road at least a few years back.

I second Stillwater Pass. I've driven that road many times and there are plenty of places to set a trailer. It's a very easy trail so I wouldn't expect any issues. That is a trail that some of the ATV rental places drop off their customers to ride (so expect lots of ATV traffic). Have fun!
