    Default Metberry Gulch Gate Closed?

My daughter and I went out this weekend to try and run Metberry Gulch. We had navigational issues, mostly because it didn't dawn on me that I'd be out of cell range and the nav on my phone wouldn't work. We had a trail book we picked up that covers the Gulches and entered the GPS coordinates into my normal GPS I use for work. The route it took us to Metberry ended up down some dirt roads and through one open gate to a small fishing lake. The gate that sat on the side of the lake was closed so we were unable to get to the Gulch.

At least my lack of knowledge and GPS were unable to get to the gulch. Since I've never been there before I'm not sure we were even in the right place. I'd love to take her back out this coming weekend since I'm not on call for work and run it, how do you guys find the trailheads? Also, how do you find out if the trails are closed before you venture out?

I always take updated MVUM maps on my phone, at least. To find trailheads, it is useful to cross reference with the Wells guidebook or one of the 4x4 websites like trailsoffroad. I can usually find the trailhead with the MVUM map and a little advanced scouting online.

Shane you are coming from the springs so you have a few options for coming.
FS 360 from the south put mettbarry as the last of the 4 gultches. As it is the most northern of them. Have not been down there for a while.....it was all open to the river.

Now if you come up hwy 67 from woodland Park up to Abby LN, turn left and through west Creek, trun Right at the fire station. This brings you in on FS 360 from the north, you would hit mettbarry first.....

I don't believe you can do that, I don't think google maps supports that but I can be wrong. I use the GPX file to choose the map size. The video talks about that. You can also create a route with it and save it using gpsvisualizer.com or some other utility, but so far all the trails are visible on the google map, and after going through the process I'm familiar enough with the route to use it.

Having said that I rarely use GPS on trails.

What are you using on the trails then? I guess I question what you mean by GPS.

I use nothing. I bring the Wells books if they apply, the Delorme maps, maybe directions to the trailhead, but after that I just let it happen. Most trails are pretty predictable, and I do get lost a lot, but that's half the fun. sometimes. If I'm with a group someone else usually has a device or phone or tablet going. so far so good...

And I was thinking you meant not using a purpose built GPS but rather a GPS enabled tablet / smart phone.

A quote from a different forum: You're not lost as long as you have gas... seems to apply!

So long as you can tow my small gas tank jeep out of some trail - I'll blindly follow - might be a grand adventure...

I used to run print out from Trail damage, and do a "kind of" a pre run from Google maps.
I had a pretty good idea of where I was at.
But now that traildamage is pay and if heard the quality has went downhill.?????

I'm using an app called My Trails. It's for Android based devices only, but I think there is something similar for Apple. It allows you to download maps (vector and/or satellite images) and will display GPX data on top. The maps can take a lot of memory (especially the satellite stuff... high res images for western Colo takes over 100GB) so storage space can be an issue if you want to carry maps of a large area.

Thumbs up Re: Metberry Gulch Gate Closed?

I was out there a last month and all the gulches are open. Depending on what plans are made, I'd go to Metberry with you, it is doable in a stock Jeep. There are NO legal bypasses (especially for the slab) so don't wuss out on it. Don't worry, it looks a LOT harder than it really is.

I live in the Springs, so I'm going to give you directions that work

Hwy 24 through Woodland Park, When you get to Divide, stay in the right hand lane and turn right at the main light (if you turn left, you go to cripple creek). This is Manchester Creek Rd.
Manchester Creek Rd has a curve to the left, or you can go straight - go to the left and it turns into Cedar Mountain Rd. (county road 51)
Stay on Cedar Mtn Rd for almost 3 miles, then Cedar Mountain Rd takes a right (you will see the sign for CR51). Take the right (if you go past Golden Bell, you've gone too far)
Cedar Mountain Rd is still hard top at this point, but gets really twisty. Stay the course and it will eventually turn to dirt. STAY STRAIGHT. You will see the Pikes Forest sign on the right.
Cross over Trail Creek Rd (another dirt road) and you will "officially" be in Pikes Nat'l Forest.
about 7.5 miles in, you will see where CR51 looks like it "y"s off, stay left. You will see the metberry gulch sign (yellow) and a FSR 205 sign. That's the trailhead.

You will pass Hacket Gulch sign and also Longwater, but longwater is harder to see since their is a lot of vegetation around the gate.
