Default Brake down on Miller Rock - carnage, adventure & sunsets

My new (been on two weeks) tie-rod bent in half while heading up to Miller Rock. I’m calling crap quality, not necessarily bad diving It happened at the large tree rut step that had a lot of mud and was slick but there was nothing that I recall that should have bent it so easily!

Thanks to Jim and Max who saved the day and brought me home to get my old, slightly bent tie rod to bring back and replace. Jim took some pix, I got a few that I’ll post but here is the carnage. Ordering a heavy duty entire steering linkage tonight.... hope to get it installed next Saturday for a Sunday run

Don’t buy Omyx Ada parts, total crap! The tie rod and two ends was $57 shipped and I thought would be as good as the tie rod it replaced (which was just as skinny but definitely not as strong). I cheaped out thinking it would be fine but learned a lesson.

The old tie rod worked great getting me home, once I aligned it while airing up. Made it home totally safe and the Jeep drove great with the old, slightly bent tie rod.

Agree with your omix assessment...they make a lot cheap quality stuff. Not everything...but a lot is buyer beware. Wrenching is half the fun anyway.

Wow, that sucks but still looks like a good day. You guys look like a band in the first pic.

I use this tierod http://www.stu-offroad.com/steering/zjtie/tierod-1.htm and that site is the BEST TJ resource if you haven't seen it.

^^^ Max said that we probably look like a band right after I snapped that picture^^^

By the way, I ordered a "heavy duty" tie rod, drag link, TRE's & steering stabilizer last night.... supposed to show up on Thursday this week! I'm going to take all the old parts off during this week and hopefully have the new steering linkage installed Saturday morning. So maybe I'll be able to run the Miller Rock Saturday run, but should definitely be able to do the Sunday run.

I still can't believe how easily this "new" tie rod bent... and how it bent in half exactly in the middle. As if it was weak in the middle and a little pressure caused it to collapse.

I looked at the step once the jeep moved away - there was a bit of a protrusion that the low hanging TR likely caught. Kick'n myself for not snapping a pic of it. It wasn't obvious as a protrusion that would be dangerous though. It must have been juuuuuust enough.

May want to consider going to a heim setup that goes from knuckle to knuckle. This gets rid of the Ylink setup and GREATLY improves steering angles, steering play due to slack and all but eliminates the opportunity for death wobble. I bought solid stock and had a machine shop tap the ends for right and left handed thread to receive 3/4 heims and never had problems again. My .02

I knocked all the tie rod ends out just now and pulled the tie rod, drag link and steering stabilizer. I’m saving the current system for spares should something like this happen again. Now she’s on jacks just waiting for the new parts! Should be an easy install, maybe an hour, and I’ll be on my way!!

Thanks for the advice JP! Diesel Doc told me the same thing.... but I’ll give the y-link setup another go for now
My new setup is basically the ZJ upgrade, which has good reviews for being much stronger than the stock setup! Paul suggested it above also!

Glad you were able to get out and have some new steering one the way. Stock Jeep steering during those days was not strong what so ever.
