Default Miller Rock... best trail in the front range IMO

I did a spontaneous run up to Miller Rock again yesterday afternoon. I explored the spur I didn't make to the end previously (Forest Road 523). It's a blast, with a few easy challenges along the way but mostly pretty easy. As it nears the end, it gets tight and steeply descends towards the creek. I turned around at an incredibly steep section, where it appears most vehicles have also decided to turn around because it gets really steep right before the creek. I was a little nervous because of the steepness and looseness of the trail but luckily had no issues turning around (carefully) and climbing back up. I'd guess this spur at 5-6 miles long, and it has a few other spurs that I still haven't explored. Spur 523.1 that dead ends near Riverside, appears to be 2-3 miles long but I haven't explored it yet.

After getting back from the FS 523 spur exploration, I ran up the steep alley to Miller Rock for some fun rock crawling..... turned around at Miller Rock and came back down to the intersection and headed down where I came in (at the town of Raymond). I can't wait to come back and finish exploring the spurs I haven't visited yet.... and I've skipped the main obstacles that last couple times since I drove alone and don't want to risk anything on these major obstacles.

Would love to come back one of these weekends with some of you other folks, and spend the day exploring the entire Miller Rock area! It's the best trail in the front range in my opinion..... challenging, quiet, beautiful ... and close to home

I REALLY wish to explore ALL of the (legal) spurs / trails at Miller.

We can get this done!! Maybe this weekend?

I hope to have the parking brake lines in this week / jeep road worthy this week. Rear calipers have been giving me braking fits as they need parking brake use to keep them properly adjusted. The driver's side rear caliper decided to puke out its piston seal while activating the p-brake system - so it was warranty replaced and is awaiting me to install it this week (waiting until p-brake cables arrive and I'll tend the batch at one sitting).

I will have to see if the wife will allow me to wheel this coming weekend.... she's been complaining that I'm gone wheelin' too much LOL

Cool thing is with Miller Rock being 10-15 minutes from my house, it's easy to minimize how long I'm gone since getting to and from the trail isn't an issue

With the exception of the short spur with the obstacle, and the spur Chris was describing to you last weekend, we haven't explored any, either, despite wheeling it at least a dozen times over the years. That sounds like a super fun day! I do love that trail, too - close, and a little enough of everything for fun wheeling. Kind of like Lefthand Canyon (sniff) used to be, only less shoot-y, and less shelf-y.

I'd be interested in a group run there. I've never done that trail before.

I generally stop skiing around June 1st or so - unless I head to the southern hemisphere. But that doesn't mean I can't get out in the jeep before then!

I heard they were going to extend one/some of the trails that currently peeter out and make it exit somewhere other than thru the Glacier View Camp. Not sure how true that is but would be cool to extend the trails after the obstacle and creek crossing. The mvum map shows these continue with dispersed camping but trail books and traildamage advise to turn around right after creek crossing and I always have.

Lets pick a date in the next few weeks to do this folks!! If someone wants to start throwing out a date we can go from there. I live 15 minutes from here so I shouldn’t have a problem making it

I’m interested too, I’m not quite ready for those obstacles yet but maybe some of the easier spurs? I’ll keep an eye on this post!

Hey Chris, we can run up to Miller Rock first as it is an awesome climb with some challenging sections. They aren’t as intimidating as the obstacles on the creek crossing spur but it’s a blast and a great testing ground before attempting the Other obstacle!

Are you still thinking this weekend Jim? If so, Sunday might work for me and the weather looks better. I am not actually sure where Miller Rock is - somewhere near Allenspark.
Edit - I found the area between 103 and the Jamestown rd.

Probably not this weekend. Saturday doesn't look inviting and Sunday I'm busy.

Should we think about the weekend after this weekend? Matt can have an Stay-At-Home weekend...

To be a little more specific. Trailhead is right about here: 40.158416, -105.452766

I tend to get very good approximate coordinates of trailheads after running them that way I can easily find again without having to look up later. Helps for when you have no cell service (per usual) as well.
