    Default CJ8 built 42s

    I think there is a lot of value here for someone looking for a built hardcore rig. It was originally listed at 30k a month or so ago - keeps dropping in price. I think I would drop the tire size a bit to 39 or so, but I do like it. Don't have the money for it...but I like it...

    Seen this one in action. Definitely a monster on the trail! Ad says it's street legal (not that I'd want to drive it on the road), but I believe they're not able to get it emission certified in Denver area (or any "AirCare" location), which could be a problem for some of us.

    Here's one that I think is a bit nicer (not built quite as much) and less expensive although getting it home would be more effort.

    Yup - that is nice. I like the 37s a bit better (less built and more driveable) and the body looks good although cannot say I like the way the those extra wide flat fenders look on the front for some reason (small details).

    Yep I agree with ya but going to full width axles in a Jeep presents some challenges and you gotta do what you gotta do to stay legal. Even here in Colorado we have pretty well defined laws about how much tire can stick out past the body. I don't think the laws are enforced here super strictly, but I can't imagine the cops turning a blind eye to this one very often;

    Understand what you are saying but don't think it's much of an issue around here. Guess I am saying I would take my chances.

    After watching this guy get ticketed twice in the same day (the second time they made him park it on the side of the road and bring his trailer to get it... telling him he was lucky they didn't impound it on the spot) , I am not so cavalier.

    Just for the tires sticking out past the wheel wells? Had to be something else going on there. My tires stick out wayyy past my wheel wells and I've never been bothered about it.

    I am pretty sure there are just a few municipalities that have tire coverage laws, like Denver. I never got pulled over.

    Although its not a cj8 - it does have a longer wheelbase (and can be pic-up style with half cab) and is built pretty well I think and still pretty driveable (minus the auto lockers). Kind of an old school build with carbed 225 v6/sm420 (I'd like to put one of those in my cj5) and D20 (can't run a PTO or OD but has some advantages). D44s front and back is plenty for the v6 - don't love the detroit style lockers

    Happened on a Scrambler event about 4-5 years ago. A dozen or so of us left out of Fairplay to drive the short distance up to Montgomery Res (on the way to Wheeler Lake). A Sheriff pulled out of a side road as we passed by with his lights on. We all pulled over and he proceeded to give out tickets to 5 Jeeps in our group for exposed tires. On the way back that afternoon a State Patrol came up behind the group with lights on. This time only a few of us pulled over (only one who had been in violation that morning). The office proceeded to tell the man in the Black Scrambler that his tires were sticking out beyond the legal limit. When the driver asked for him to give him a break since he had just been sighted that morning (showed him the ticket), the SP officer got a big attitude about the driver knowingly breaking the law and that he should not have pressed his luck. Then he told him he could not allow him to continue to drive on the road and threatened to have the Jeep impounded if was not removed from the roadside before the tow truck arrived.

    I know many people do it but, it seems a matter of luck if the LLE has a slow day and is in a mood to make some money.

    Does anyone know what the law on this actually is for Colorado? I've been trying to find something on it, but all i can find is info on tread depth regs. That and older forum posts mentioning tire coverage in Denver Metro.

    There is not a specific statute, I suppose they could cite you for unsafe vehicle.

    My understanding is that the laws go back to the old vehicle safety inspection days (1975?). When they did away with the inspections, the rules became law. The rule was 1.5" beyond the fender (don't know if that is measured from the tread or includes sidewall too).
