"Just for the tires sticking out past the wheel wells? Had to be something else going on there. My tires stick out wayyy past my wheel wells and I've never been bothered about it."
Happened on a Scrambler event about 4-5 years ago. A dozen or so of us left out of Fairplay to drive the short distance up to Montgomery Res (on the way to Wheeler Lake). A Sheriff pulled out of a side road as we passed by with his lights on. We all pulled over and he proceeded to give out tickets to 5 Jeeps in our group for exposed tires. On the way back that afternoon a State Patrol came up behind the group with lights on. This time only a few of us pulled over (only one who had been in violation that morning). The office proceeded to tell the man in the Black Scrambler that his tires were sticking out beyond the legal limit. When the driver asked for him to give him a break since he had just been sighted that morning (showed him the ticket), the SP officer got a big attitude about the driver knowingly breaking the law and that he should not have pressed his luck. Then he told him he could not allow him to continue to drive on the road and threatened to have the Jeep impounded if was not removed from the roadside before the tow truck arrived.
I know many people do it but, it seems a matter of luck if the LLE has a slow day and is in a mood to make some money.
