    Default Mnt Herman

I went down to meet up with a friend and do a little shake down run with my rig. He was camping with his son and doing a little target practices. The forest service has shut down most of the shooting along Mnt Herman and I understand why. It is so that they can cute down on all the trash that irresponsible people leave. I was very disappointed to say the least. I like going down there because it is an easy drive from my home and the rock formation are incredible unique. They found a place to camp right on the other side of where they start allowing shooting and the spur dead ends after a intersection. Going right from the intersection leads you on a 2 mile loop back to Mnt Herman road. Very nice meandering through rocks slight up and down grades. We went a little ways down Mnt Herman and took another spur which was much easier doable in most any vehicle. All along that trail was places littered with spots where people tested their skills with what ever toy they bought for X-mas. I was very disappointed. Because there used to be no ugly yellow signs saying no shooting in this area (spurs off mnt Herman road) and I can see more signs popping up for the remainder off that road after driving the area. I did not get any pictures off those spots but you can just imagine what a ranger and tree huggers (hikers) which are many are witness to. Won't be long before shooting won't be allowed at all in our forests and I can't blame anyone who puts a stop to it after what I saw. But the sad thing is there will be no place for father to teach how to shoot and sped quality time with his son in a responsible manner. It is becoming more common all over.

Sorry about the rant but what is wrong with people????????

Not just shooting and camping areas are affected. I hit the ice the other day and in the middle of the lake
came up to a huge mess. Looked like a group set up, fished (or partied) the day, then just left everything and walked away. Maybe where that group came from they hire people to clean up after everyone, who knows, but it was disappointing to say the least.

Actually they shut the area down a few years back because of safety concerns. After one death when some ignit killed a nearby camper with a stray shot, and numerous close-calls, they closed the area to target shooting. Should go without saying, but - ALWAYS SHOOT AGAINST A BERM OR HILLSIDE.

The murder up there last year didn't help matters either.

Yeah I've seen some of those shooting areas and it really is ugly and sad seeing the way people leave them.
Folks go in there and bring back truck loads of full garbage bags and it barely makes a dent.
A week later you could never tell someone actually tried to clean it up. Hate seeing all those trees just shot in half too.
Gold camp / Old Stage road behind the Broadmoor has the same problem. Just hard to look at.

Glad you had a good time otherwise and thanks for the report David.

I agree David, Across the street from Rainbow falls is that shooting area. Drove through there last year down from a trail and it was the saddest thing I ever saw. Looked like a city dump, with debris blowing in front of my rig and lining the trail. People harp on this sport for the destruction of lands but unless you are completely irresponsible it is very minimal impact compared to the shooters that leave their crap, and now, the new thing (primarily up near hackett trail system) gem hunters that leave HUGE holes in the ground and move on to make another. Not sorry for my rant.

Other than that, glad you guys had fun!
