    Default Newbie In Loveland

    Hello everybody.
New to Colorado and new to to Jeeping. I moved to Colorado in May from Florida. I bought a 1978 CJ5 a month or so ago. Its pretty much all original. Haven't been on any trails yet as I'm still getting a few things worked out on the Jeep and getting used to it. Does anyone know of any place near Loveland where I can get off road without going up into the mountains or driving for hours to get there? Just some place where I can learn the characteristics of my Jeep without the risk of being stuck far from home like a dirt trail or field or something. I look forward to hitting up some of the trails when the snow is gone and the trails are cleared up. Right now I don't even have a top, much less any recovery gear to get myself out of a jam. But in the mean time I'm getting the Jeep out when its warmer and putting around town to get used to it. Got to say I love it.
Thank you for letting me join and hope to eventually meet you guys on the trails. Also, this Jeep came from the Lakewood and Wellington areas, so if anyone has seen or knows anything about this Jeep, please let me know.

Welcome! I live straight west in the mountains from you (near Estes Park). If your closer to Fort Collins there are a few trails that I'm not super familiar with and if your closer to Longmont Dry St Vrain is just 10 - 15 minutes up Hwy 7 from Lyons....either way you will have to get a little up into the mountains..... but you could just cruise some dirt roads in foothill communities west of Loveland or farm rods in the country.

without a top you'll want to stick to sunny and warmer days this time of year

If you wanna meet up I'll be happy to since I live pretty close and am always looking for an excuse to get out!!! Love old Jeeps!!!

I started with a 79 CJ-5 and as you say yours is mostly original I'll enjoy taking a look at yours for some memories. What motor does it have? V-8 with headers into glass packs was mine - enjoyed that sound.

Bunce School Road would be my first recommendation - just a bit farther up from Dry St. Vrain. Stir the waters in "Planning" to meet up with at least one other (who might have recovery gear) if heading out the first time. Unlikely you'd need any recovery - but there is a bit of snow about.

Hmmm - maybe Switzerland trail would be on the list too. It's an old railroad bed so it's fairly easy - but you'd be out on a trail.
