Default Replacing 1 tire in a set

    Hello,

I noticed a small slice in the sidewall of my tire and I'm wondering about replacing 1 in a set of 4. If i never took this rig off road, I wouldn't think twice about running the rest of the tread off this tire. Its not "bad" but I don't want to invite any issues in the wilderness.

The 4runner came with LT265/70/17 Cooper Discoverer ATP's. When new there should be 16.5/32nds of tread on them (13mm). I measured 10mm of tread depth on all 4 with a digital caliper. If I replace 1 tire is this size difference going to cause my traction control and other traction electronics to act a fool? Its currently positioned as the right rear tire.

On a Volvo AWD system (S60R) they recommended no more than 3/32nds(2.5mm) difference.

FYI burning off the rears in a cloud of smoke and replacing 2 tires didn't fly with the wife.

    Seems like my options are:
Replace the 1 tire if the traction systems will allow it
Roll the dice on a tire with a small slice till it wears out.

    Thanks for the input,

    Rob

What do you have for a spare? Ideally, I like to have a matching full size spare and rotate the 5th tire as part of the rotation and balance every 5k miles or so. If its not a matching spare that can be rotated in place of the sliced tire (make the sliced tire a spare), but is good full size tire, then run the sliced tire. If it goes flat, use the spare to get home. If the spare isn't really a good option, then you have a tougher decision - maybe get a decent full sized spare (used is ok) and run the slice tire. Some really like the repair kits, and don't even carry a spare - so guess that is an options as well - get a good repair get (and know how to use it) to get you home. I prefer having a spare, but seen some that have done temporary repair of nasty sidewall tears that work plenty well to get home.

I'm in the spare tire crowd - if full size - swap'm and keep it as a spare.

    OR

If under warranty see what the swap out cost would be and swap it for new / like replacement. BONUS would be - if you have a full size spare - put the warranty replaced as the spare and move the good spare to the running set.

I'm one that does not rotate my spare and my spares are different, slightly, from the running set. The spare is certainly suitable to get me home, at distance.

It's the trail edition so it came with at tires originally. Theres a same size (but p rated) Dunlop at20 under there. I could just buy a single tire and keep this one unmounted at the house i suppose.

Any thoughts to the 4wd systems caring about 3mm diameter differences?

Oh, you can. In any platform, there can be quirks... dupe (to be) removed.

You shouldn't have a problem just replacing the one tire.

I would put the new tire on the rear as it would minimize any problems. There is more difference going around corners than you would ever see in that tread difference. I suspect you wouldn't know the difference.

As an alternative, you could try to get a used tire with similar tread depth. Ebay is a good source for single tires.

Thanks guys, this seems like a fairly common tire in this size. I'll try the used route first.

Take the car to a tire dealer that sells the same brand/type tire. Show them the tire (mounted on the vehicle) and ask if it should be replaced under warranty. You won't have someone trying to sell a new set of tires because they think you might have some anxiety over the sidewall "cut."

I caused sidewall damage to a car that I had borrowed, took it to a local chain store, same as the owner bought the tires from: They said it was "cosmetic damage." I showed it to a relative who just happened to work for a competing tire chain: "Cosmetic damage." When I returned the vehicle, the owner got the same response from the shop where he bought the tires.

Moral of the story: "Looks bad" may not be bad. Have a professional look at the actual damage.
