    Default Junk Yard'n 101

I'm somewhat clueless / newbie for you-pull junk yards in my area. I went with Dad, as a kid, to junk yards back home but I haven't been to any here.

I'd like to poke around some selection of jeeps - somewhat to pick some small stuff, somewhat to get some ideas.

    1) What junk yards are around that folks might recommend? Closer to Fort Collins is preferred, but I'd travel to south Denver metro.

    2) Any tips for a newbie?

    Thanks

if you know what you're looking for. carry just the tools you need. otherwise i normally put just a pair of channel locks and maybe a couple screw drivers in my pocket and walk the yard and see whats there. then if you find something that you want then go back and get tools etc out of car/truck. that way you aren't carrying a heavy tool bag all over for nothing. be prepared to do alot of walking and possible not find what you're looking for.

There is. Upull on Santa Fe between Littleton and Castle Rock, haven't been there so not sure what they have. Used to be Colorado Auto off Santa Fe south of Oxford, many years ago so not sure if they are around. There is a Jeep bone yard off I25 about Weld County road 8 ( between 52 and 7), but I Haven't been there either. Might be places to try to Google.

Body mount bushings (front center under radiator bolt came out and I lost the rubber bits), fender mounted factory jack (considering going that route vs hi-lift), washer fluid bottle (mine leaks), a few OEM bolts (need to replace a frozen roll bar bolt - would like to replace with factory), Odd's -n- End's stuff - just poke about and see if i get an idea. Tossing about having a factory fuse box / power distribution box in the engine bay / newer factory wiring box (very low priority - but I want to look and see what might tickle my mind).

Mostly, aside from some small stuff, I want to walk and get ideas.

There is a u-pull-&-pay just a few blocks from my house, off 64th ave and Broadway. It is just off I-25 and north of 58th ave.
Look up LKQ as well, self service auto parts 6100 Federal Blvd
Stadium AUto parts at 8th and I-25

I agree with the "bring the tools you need for the specific part" thing , and bring more! Battery operated tools are a godsend, find a good set of floor mats there to lay on, wear water proof boots, rubber gloves and don't be in a rush. I usually frequent the u-pull-n pay on 58th just off the highway. Also remember that if there is anything there worth good "craigslist" money , it's likely gone already. Some places will charge you for every nut and bolt so only get what you need. Most charge a $2.00 entrance fee. Always look for hidden treasures in the cars, even if it's not the one you are after. There can be some pretty cool finds, just not an already pulled GM kingpin Dana 60 for the taking

The bigger yards are online, and do post a running inventory.

The pull in Littleton (Santa Fe) will have something if you are lucky.
Most there stuff is GC or older Cherokee.
But they do get yj's now and then.

Colorado auto has been sold so they are moving there products fast.
LKQ bought them and are selling the property.
They are not nice staff anymore.
    Very rude.
    Close at noon on Saturday.

Instead of a factory jack just get a bottle jack. They usually will fit in same spot and work much better.

Ya they have been there for ever.
Some of the stuff they have is vintage and in great shape.
But it's all going NG away.
    Sold or not.
    They will crush stuff soon....

The property is going to get shipping container aparments from what we hear.
The property half a block away is getting 3 story condos with a Park ng garage.

I went there over the summer. They have a fair amount of jeeps and they were fairly reasonable with price. I'd call ahead to any junk yard before driving. They can usually tell you if they at least have the vehicle.

Thanks folks. Knowing names / locations for a yard where I can walk around is handy. I'll look into Windsor and Greeley first.

I have been going to yards for 25 years and it used to be that you could get just about anything that you needed. Here are my insights:

    1) Now in many cases, yards keep certain vehicles in "reserve". These are classic (Mustang/Camaro/VW) or sought after vehicles (Jeep/Toyota). They then strip these vehicles and sell the parts online for inflated prices.

    2) Many yards have their vehicle inventory posted online, but I would call in advance to confirm if they have a specific vehicle. Just because it is on their site doesn't mean they still have it. Several yards will even have a photo posted. It is great if you need to see what damage a vehicle may have, or what color it is.

    3) Every yard now requires a "core" charge on every single part. Want a seat? There is a core charge. Want a turn sign lens? There is a core charge. Used brake pads? Core charge... It is just a scapegoat to make extra $. I just factor it into the price of doing business with them.

    4) I used to spend a considerable amount of time there, as well as money. Now I probably only spend 10% of the time that I used to. Limited selection and higher prices, combined with better alternatives such as CL or Ebay have driven me away. Rarely do I need to go to a yard for anything now.

    5) I typically take all the tools that I think I may or may not need, but leave most in the vehicle out of site. I only carry in the minimum number of tools. Often times I will carry my tools in an old backpack. Typically I take a plastic bag or a bucket to put smaller grimy parts in (also I keep all the nuts/bolts that I pull off).

    6) Most yards will allow power tools, but not all. Best to check before you go.

Here are links for some of the yards that I have gone to with decent luck, but finding a Jeep CJ/YJ/TJ is nearly impossible. If they are in the yard, they get stripped quickly.

Regarding Colorado Auto Parts - to my knowledge they are alive and kicking, but yes under new management. The location Svigels which is directly in front of Colorado Auto is going out of business as the property has been sold. Apparently this has no impact on Colorado Auto at this time.

Actually I think Colorado is still open and it is Swiggles that has closed. Pretty sure Colorado is going to be there for a very long time.
