    Default 242 transfercase

Well the jeep saga continues. I got the stud out of the unibody, and got the long arm kit installed then, on the way to the alignment shop the transfer case jumped out of 2wd into a false neutral position. I was able to put it back in gear, but it keeps jumping out. I looked on the internet and found info on adjusting linkage, but it does not seem to help.
My question s does anyone have any other idea before I take it to a shop to have it rebuilt.
    Thanks Phil

Does it jump out of other gears too? Will it hold 4wd hi / lo?

Just because it's easy and external it probably isn't this but when sometimes when the shift linkage bushings wear out on an NP231 it moves away from the case and you can't adjust it enough to fully go into 2wd and it pops out under throttle.

You comment on finding info on the adjusting linkage - have you made any adjustment?

Have you considered disconnecting the in-cab control from the linkage at the TC to manually set the TC into 2H mode - and then see if it is reliable or if it pops out - and when it pops out - is the TC linkage lever moved from 2H or is it still at the 2H position.

I'm wondering if your in-cab control is at the far end of its travel and the TC linkage wants to travel more to be fully into 2H mode.

The tcase is easy to pull out yourself and open up, if it's the shift fork you can probably wrap it up at home.

    Jim
I have not tried that, but will give it a try.
    Paul
That is an option but I do not wat to start something that I cannot finish, and be in worst shape.

Jim; I just went out and tried that, and it popped out of gear again. I guess the next step is to remove the tc and see if I can tell what is happening.

A question to clarify / summarize the issue:

    1) It was working properly prior to work on the vehicle, yes?
    2) What vehicle work did you do? (I recall a comment about a transmission bolt??? and some suspension arms???)
    3) In any of that work, did the transfer case change position relative to the in-cab shift lever?
    4) Did you make any adjustment of the TC shift lever to improve the issue?
    5) You say it pops out of all gears - were you talking transmission gears or TC gears (2H, 4H, 4L)?

If it was working properly I question if it needs to be opened up vs. attention to the adjustment of the TC shift arm.

    Jim:
Yes the transfer case was working correctly prior to installing a long arm kit on the xj.
The bolt was in the unibody so not related to the transmission or the TC,.
The transmission and transfer case did drop some during the install, but final position is approximately the same. New cross member was installed.
No adjustments have been made to the shift lever just the linkage undernieth,
yes It is the T/C that pops out of 2wd,4hi,4lo.

As it was working prior to the mods and that the trans/TC did change position - even slightly, I'd give more attention to shift lever adjustment before pulling it for inspection.

(saying from experience of pulling mine where I should have pulled a simple front diff cover to discover my problem)

Also, verify that your engine mounts are in good working condition.

Check the hole that your shift lever is going through and see if it needs to be enlarged a bit.

That really sounds like a good possibility, makes sense. I guess it would just stop the shift lever from moving far enough.
