    Default MSV

I went out with Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery today. 2017 Ram 1500 (stock) was buried in the mud on Friday, 1.5 miles past the gatekeeper at the Camp Dick Trailhead. They were able to get out but needed to get back to the trailhead. They did not feel running the trail via Coney Flats to Peak to Peak was an option. The problem area has gotten considerably more difficult over the weekend. Going in, the spot is not horrible, just a big drop into a muddy bog, trying to come out and going up the drop is where the problems occurred. Lifted vehicles with oversized tires had no problems. We had a 4 door Power Wagon that was unable to get through without being winched. We were able to get the Ram 1500 through due to the CO R&R guys doing a great job slogging through a lot of mud. The front bumper and grill were removed to provide more clearance. I have video of the recovery that I will post as soon as the GoPro decides to cooperate with me. I am new to all of this, I hope I have posted in the right area.

    Good job with the removal!

Was the vehicle on or off trail? Is the trail, in that section unusually difficult or was the truck not well suited to the trail?

How long did it take to remove the bumper and grill?

This forum seems about right - looking forward to seeing some photos of vid of the stuck.

We expected the vehicle to be on trail when we got there but it had been taken out. They were not off trail at any time, As far as driving in an inappropriate area. The problem was they had to go back the way they came, which was more difficult, not only in the approach, but the trail had deteriorated substantially over the weekend. When we ran MSV on July 9th this section was underwater, and there was a drop, but no one had difficulty with it. The truck was pretty low profile and probably should have never attempted it. We had an auto body guy in the recovery and he had the bumper and the grill off in probably 10 minutes.

You may have noticed a large pile of road base near the entrance cabin. Trailridge runners are working with the FS to get the mud repaired. FS yet to commit a date.

Last time we went was last month. I tried to avoid that tank trap but got sucked in sideways. It was fairly deep then, can't imagine how deep it is now with all the rig's that have gone through it with big tires. There was a big Jeep group in front of us the next day and I know at least one got stuck in that thing.

Good job on the recovery! MSV and Coney have become much more difficult over the last few years. I think I know the spot you're talking about, I noticed on the last run that the tippiest spot was in the middle of a deep puddle after a significant underwater dropoff. I was really surprised that after passing the lake on Coney the trail is just as rough now as it was leading up to it. In previous years it got progressively easier from there, now it's all crawling all the way.

How was your experience with Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery?

Awesome on the recovery! I'm assuming it's the tippy muddy spot that Paul's talking about? That one caught me off guard last month, and I can only imagine how much worse it's gotten with all the rain (yay rain, though).

Thanks for this info on this, I live very close to this trail but haven't attempted it yet..... looks like I'll make sure I'm with a group if and when I give this trail a go. And certainly I won't go anytime soon, as it's been raining all night and so far all day today ;-/

Fyi msv is going to be closed the 19th and 20th of this month so Trailridge runners can repair the large mud hole. In part 11 cubic yards of road base has to be moved in and placed along with some specialed fabric and lots of logs. Don't plan anything up there that weekend.

    This in from Adopt-A-Road:

Middle St. Vrain (FR114) and Coney Flats (FR507) will probably close August 18 to repair a 35 foot long bog that has developed. The closure may last through the end of the year as the Forest Service also has a project planned for September to replace the Peaceful Valley campground bridge.

And it will be. I made my post right after the decison was made by trr. It was stated as a definite that the fs is closing it while the work is done. And its definately being done that weekend barring and act of god.

Right - I understand that from your posts.

Why I listed the Adopt-A-Road info is that due to the bridge repair that the trail might be closed for the season.
