Default 2017-07-15 Barbour Fork - shakedown run

Good run folks! Short but quick... and nearly perfect weather.

Sorry for making that wrong turn (thats what you get for putting me in front). Added a little excitement to the trip at least.

Brian, good trip. No issue with the turn. Just means I got to map a new piece of trail. It adds to the adventures of the day.

Hey Brandon, The fuel system seems pretty solid. No signs of leakage and had solid fuel delivery even at some pretty odd angles (I won't go into details but I had an awesome off camber wheel stand!).

I do need a couple of other repairs for the Jeep now but nothing significant. Leaked about a quart of antifreeze today from the lower rad hose, so that needs replaced tomorrow and I managed to shear a bolt on my front bumper today but I already got that fixed.

I'm typically up for a "wrong turn" event - see some new sights!

I didn't take but a scant few pictures today. Highlights here, full set at the link:
    www.JimWilliamson.net/automobile/2017-07-15--barbour-fork

Brian in the silver CJ-8 wished to get his Jeep out for a shakedown run after some changes. I was able to get mine on the road a couple of days prior but I still had a belt squeal / tension issue. I was good enough for highway running so I jumped in. We were a group of five vehicles on a wonderful weather Saturday.

Moving on the trail at 10:30am we followed a counter-clockwise loop. Due to low moisture, fire bans are in effect. This is keeping the area closed at night to keep camp fires out. The area was fairly void of people for much of the day.

Near the end of the trail, at the shelter where tents were assembled, we were flagged down for a ride to town as the campers' truck was broken. The three fit into my jeep and not but a bit down the trail we came upon their buddy's truck - in the middle of the trail. Back to the buddy for the keys he didn't wish to move it - but it's a weekend and it's sitting in the middle of the trail - it would be best to be moved off of the trail to keep others from having to go around. In the end, we pulled it off of the main trail and set it next to a tree, in the shade, of a side track. Kids dropped at the hot springs parking lot in town.

Overall, the CJ-8 faired decently. One broken (sheared) bumper bolt and some leaking coolant to tend.

    Trail Stats
    Length 7.1 miles
    Area 0.6 square miles
    Start 10:33am
    End 12:50pm
    Elapsed 2h 18m
    Average Speed 3 mph
    Max Speed 13 mph

In about ten feet the ?unscratched? silver paint of this 1984? CJ-8 almost became scratch-n-dent on the right side. He's heading to the "wheelstand" spot where the right rear dips into a hole while the right front and left rear are high. The left front hangs a couple feet in the air. I kept watch at the left rear as the suspension started to unload but fortunately it wasn't leaned over far enough to come off of the ground for a right side flop - close though.

Oh, I believe Brody's truck was behind me as I trekked from I-70 to US-6 through Golden. Where I went west into the canyon, it turned north.

All good. Actually, I think the missed turn was the most exciting part about the whole run. It got pretty off camber and tight in on the slope up and then the turn around was a challenge not trying to drop over an edge, back into or knock down a tree. Brian found out some trees are harder than bolts , and a stupid dirt biker who thought he should weave his way through the line of jeeps until he clipped a tree and dumped his bike .

On a side note, most of the blocks that we put up on 24 June have already been removed and people are using the bypasses or illegal trails.

I spent some time there today with my grandkids, fun time. The only bad thing is driving through Indian Springs when they get excited to swim in the “hot pool.” We spent an hour on the trail, 2 hours at the pool and then back for another hour on the trail. They told their Mom I only tried to kill them once, they don’t like the off camber stuff.
