Took my stock Samurai up for a nice easy ride yesterday. Ran East Magnolia hoping to connect to Mammoth Gulch but Magnolia West is still closed. Lots of campers on East Magnolia. I headed out the way I came in and ran up Mammoth Gulch, my original plan was to hit the old dam site and let my lab have a swim, started down the trail to the lake and snow drifts were getting bigger, but there were tracks thru them so I kept going. One or two drifts took some encouragement in my massive 205/70 r15 tires but I made it thru, lol. Dog had a fun time in the very cold water, but it was a beautiful day and he didn't seem to mind in the slightest.
I talked to a couple in a sxs and asked about Rollins Pass, they said they got a little bit past Jenny Creek before the drifts turned them back.
After the Mammoth lake spur I decided to see how far up the main trail I could get. Right before the left turn to Apex is a series of off camber drifts. Going to be a bit longer but there is a river melting off those drifts so it won't be too long.
Stopped by the Stage Stop in Rollinsville for lunch (pretty decent)
I've been wheeling west of Longmont for about 20 years but never ran Gross Reservoir trails so on the way down I decided to hit Gross. Pretty area but not much for wheeling, again lots of campers.
The way out is down Magnolia hill, pretty steep section for about 4 miles and I could smell my brakes getting hot, kinda worried me but I could see the bottom... Got to the bottom and drove into Boulder without touching the brakes, came to the 1st stop light and WOW, brakes work awesome now, they were good before but for some reason they are like Indy car brakes now. Lol. Must have burned some oil off them or something.
Back home and filled up for this weeks commute, 110miles for 4.2 gallons of gas! Gotta love a Samurai.
