    Default Anything Special for Altitude

OK, I've just gotten to Colorado. Coming from the low lands of the Mojave (sea level and below) and hot desert environment. I run 5/30 Synthetic currently and know it should be good through the summer at least. But I'd like to know if there are things I should do to the Jeep because I'm going to be running 5000' and above. I look to you folks as being the experts here so let me hear what you think I should do to the Jeep. I appreciate any answers in advance.

None that I can think of - curious to hear what might pop up.

Best comment from me is: Fuel Injection is a wonderful thing with elevation change!!

Agreed! Altitude adjustment is mostly for old carburetors...not many of those left...

OK so I only have to figure out how this old man adjusts to the altitude. So far exercise and breathing suck.

I had you firmly in mind as I typed FI. How's the jeep project now?

No need to change anything, the vehicles' computer will do that for you!! Just be ready for less power, it's not the jeep, it's the altitude. Took my 96 explorer up pikes peak a little over a year and a half ago, it was not happy over 14,000ft.!!!

The only real thing you need to know about going up and down in altitude is to not do it on I-70 on Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon.

Yea I already figured that one out. I'm guessing 285 is just as bad for local stuff.

First off welcome to high elevation wheeling.

Next, I have a thread here about quality oils.
Call Greg and use his stuff and service's.
Fuel treatment- mile high is the product, it's an emulsifier so if you get after in you fuel it will fix the issue.
Engine oil- his stuff is awesome he has the 5w-30 it is a far longer lasting and better protecting.
They do sample testing free as part of the deal.

You may want to do a programer get the power back.

The old cj is doing okay for now - it ran okay a couple weeks ago on Yankee Hill, and think it should be better tomorrow on Slaughterhouse. Slowly getting the carb tuned better and better. I think the upgrade to the comp cam caused more change with tuning than I expected. Using a slightly hotter plug with slightly larger gap has helped as well as stepping the carb jet size down. Might step down one more before all is said an done as I want it to run well on the high jeep passes - but have to be careful not to overly lean it out here in Denver and burn a valve or cause other pre-ignition damage. The kind of stuff Eagle6 doesn't have to worry about.

285 is usually ok. Watch the cops on that road though.

When I moved back from Seattle I was wonderfully surprised to get a frozen radiator. I had never really needed to add coolant while I was there and never checked it being that my toyota at the time was only a couple years old. If you are not sure a coolant flush is not a bad idea before winter. Might consider a block heater for the colder months. It is really only needed for a couple weeks a year, but sometimes my YJ just couldn't start when the temps were 0 or below and I needed it most to get to work.
