Looking for the best men's shoe for working out. Mostly at the gym but would like something that would work well out on the street as well. That is unless that isn't a good idea...

Mostly for cardio and lighter strength training, NOT for heavy lifting.

    Any suggestions?

Good job getting back to the gym! I've found that just about any running shoe is a good choice. I currently have NBs, but I try them all when I go buy them and just get what feels good. In my experience with rehabing a back and neck injury (stood up into a low beam and knocked myself unconcious) it was important for me to wear running shoes outside of working out, especially when I was working in the garage or doing anything else that requires standing still for a while.

I have a Wellness Mat in my kitchen that I've kept after my recovery, it's awesome. Highly recommend them if standing still bothers your injury.

I like Joe Rogan a lot and I think this is dead on regarding heavy lifting and actual results:

I'm partial to Under Armour since they have always been good to me for any article of clothing. I don't think they still make the shoes I have but I had two pairs of the same model over about 3 years and they both held up great and I haven't any problems other then normal wear and tear. I know some people say UA break down too fast but with all the shoes I've bought from them I've never had any problem.

Honestly I wouldn't over think the shoes. Just go to Dicks or some other store try on some pairs see what fits and feels good and those will be fine. If you are just going to the gym and doing moderate work outs you don't need anything special or expensive. I lift pretty hard and my shoes are fine no need for anything fancy unless you want to spend a lot of money and "look" like you know what you are doing.

Reebok Zigtech shoes are also real nice especially for running I'd look into getting a pair similar to these.

But seriously, a good x-trainer may be what you're after. Not great at anything but good all around support.

for cardio get a shoe that has cushion for the impact of your body weight. as for weight lifting get a shoe that has a more solid base. I train bare footed for lifting and then use an UnderArmor shoe for heavy events with a wide base to not roll my ankles. I know New Balance has decent shoes. check out Big 5 sporting they have cheaper brand name shoes. plus they will let you "play" around w/shoes If you need to exchange.
