"For what it matters, China Wall is considered a designated OHV trail (at least according to this Stay the Trail list: http://staythetrail.org/content.aspx...dule_id=234795) and requires a permit even for licensed/registered/plated full size vehicles (like jeeps). Note that the OHV permit is not an OHV registration (such as is required for a non-license/plated ATV or the like). I got my OHV permit with the upcoming China Wall run in mind, but it works for any other OHV designated trail and is valid through March 31 of 2018.

I realize some may disagree with this policy - heck I am not sure I agree with it and have never gotten one before - and I would guess chances of an actual citation are pretty low (I've never been approached by an officer or ranger about it previously). But figured I'd share the information, and for $25.25, I figure its as much a donation to the FS as anything else."

Curious where you are seeing that a permit is required. It is not on this list of affected trails. I have no problem buying one but waited until the last minute and it'll be a pain to get down there tomorrow.

Very confusing. My red 4Runner is not registered via the State MVR, and the Ranger at the Santa Fe office asked me that when obtaining an OHV registration for the rig. She mentioned nothing about an additional permit. Im assuming plated vehicle=Permit, Non Plated=Registration. In either case im not sure how they can say only a handful of trails require this special permit and others don't. That would mean every dirt road with a numbered FS sign would require such a permit.

I agree its not super clear - but China Wall is on this list: http://staythetrail.org/content.aspx...dule_id=234795
Don't know why the lists are different.

According to Stay the Trail website - there is a difference between OHV Registration and an OHV permit. Permits are for vehicles that are already have license plate registration as I understand. http://staythetrail.org/content.aspx...dule_id=228438
    Colorado OHV Registration Requirements

"All OHVs owned and operated in Colorado (including motor vehicles and motorcycles that are not licensed for public road access) must display current Colorado OHV registration stickers when in a person’s possession in an OHV staging area or operated on any designated OHV trails or routes in Colorado.
    Colorado OHV Use Permit Requirements

“All OHVs and motor vehicles (including motorcycles) that display a valid Colorado or out-of -state license plate must also display a current Colorado OHV use permit sticker when operated on any designated OHV trails in Colorado."

“All out of state OHVs (including OHVs that display an out of state OHV registration) must also display a current Colorado OHV use permit sticker when operated on any designated OHV trails or routes in Colorado.”

Isn't that a list of every trail? I don't see anywhere that it says those require a permit.

This list says it's the trails where a permit is required, China wall isn't on it.

Somewhere along the line they decide if it's a "road" (designated for travel) or a "trail" (designated for recreation). Some of them make sense, such as the extreme trails around the Montrose area that were purpose built, others, like Hancock pass, which are old roads originally built for transportation do not. I wonder it there's signs at the trail heads.

The other thing is it looks like stay the trail are the only ones who maintain a list CPW issues the permits but only say some trails require it, they don't tell you which ones.

I picked up the sticker last week. For a plated vehicle you just purchase the sticker and that's it. No OHV registration paperwork is required. The first person I talked to at the counter (I believe he was just a volunteer) had no idea what I was talking about. An actual CPW person knew exactly what I was talking about and took care of me. So it doesn't seem like it's been well socialized even among the people who issue the permits.

I called the South Park ranger district and they had no idea what I was talking about. Looked at the MVUM and said "it's open to all vehicles". Good thing this whole permit process is well implemented.

Maybe it is just a scare tactic to increase revenue. I mean if the rangers don't know about it to enforce it how can the issues tickets and fine us. Anyway, they got my $25.25 last week just because I didn't want to end up there on Saturday not knowing and then get fined. Maybe we should stop asking before they figure it out and do really implement it.

You may be right - I can't tell. I ran CW today with Louis - there was not obvious sign about OHV permit, but not sure there would be. Colorado4x4.org put up some new signs with maps at the two different entrances (212 is the 'normal' and 204). The maps indicate going in from the normal 212 entrance you must take the fork to the right as you start up the first climb (this is just past where most will be gathered and camping on sat - at least from last year). The fork and loop to the left that goes behind the first hill is now closed - this is according to the map at the hwy turn-off, but there is no signage at the actual fork. There is also a closed dead end off of 204 according to the sign map, but there is no signage at the fork in the actual trail. This is right after you finish coming down the big hill on 204 heading west (away from CW) and you reach the river again (its not on my paper MVUM).

Additionally, although it is not on my old MVUM, last year we drove a connecting loop from near the west end of 204 back to 212 (up the hill) that comes out on the closed fork. Technically, probably wasn't something we should have driven last year based on MVUMs, yet it is a completely defined and used road. This route isn't on the sign maps either (as its not on the MVUM I guess), and it now has some high visibility paint where it leaves 204 that I think is to indicate a closure sign is needed. We saw the high vis paint a few other places too, and they often had new closure signs or stay the trail type signs. The hill is pretty fun to drive up, but I can see how it could have erosion and sustainability issues. Technically, according to the new sign and maps, if you take the 204 fork to the west off of 212, you cannot loop back to the 'campsite' at to the start of 212 without going onto hwy 77 (or return the way you came). We also saw one (only 1 I think) sign indicating the seasonal closure (Jan - June 15) a bit after the first right fork and climb up the first hill.

Have fun...212 itself is all the same as previously, and lots of fun. Its some of the unmarked connectors between 204 and 212 (which aren't of the MVUM) that they seem to be trying to properly close.

I'll be at the safeway in conifer. I will most likely have one extra rig with me but we are both meeting there. My buddy drives a silver FJ60 so if you see one with a tall lanky dude he is with me and will be running the trail with us.
