    Default NP249 -> NP231 97 ZJ

    I found a NP231J from a 1994 ZJ that had a 4.0. I just want to make sure there is nothing tricky about swapping this into my 1997 ZJ with 5.2L. It has an ISY like my ZJ, and I am not planning on doing an SYE for a while. I just want to get this in for the summer, and next year I will do a complete rebuild with SYE and new rear drive shaft.
    I was reading that there is a collar that I need to hammer out, but other than that it should bolt right up and run like a champ.

    So for now:
    1) Hammer out collar on input shaft
    2) Replace front and rear seals on NP231
    3) Replace rear seal on transmission.
    4) Swap out transfer cases.
    5) Swap red plug for black plug behind module in dash.

    Anything else that I need to/should do?

    I was a little confused about what was meant by collar, now I know. It is the little spacer that is inside the main input gear. I found a few threads on other forums that vaguely mention it, but figured someone would appreciate a picture.

    Also note, this is not what a main input bearing is supposed to look like.

    The Front driveshaft yoke looks a little strange on this 231. I think that it might not be the correct part. The dust shield is pressed onto the yoke, and there is a big gap behind it leaving the seal exposed.

    Can someone verify that this is how it is supposed to look?

    Just for future reference, this is how it is supposed to look. some of the other years have the debris shield pressed onto the case, but this year it is pressed onto the yoke and has about a 1/2" gap behind the shield. I do not think that it does much good that way, but oh well
