    Default Offroad Tool Kit

    Two points in this:

    1. Ditch the hi-lift for a bottle jack and scrap wood. I've already done this, mostly for weight and space. I have an OEM Toyota jack from my old FJ60 in my Jeep as well as the Jeep scissor crap.

    2. Don't carry ratcheting wrenches. I do have them in my kit and really like them in general, but I guess he makes a good point...

I have many bolts that are bigger than what he has in his tool kit. I know I carry way more tools than is necessary but I end up rescuing somebody about a third of the time we go out. If it wasn't for the high lift jack I would have suffered carnage this last weekend. We used it to pull the back end of the truck back out of the trees rather than winching forward and dragging the side through them. It has many more uses than just lifting the truck. By strapping the axle up you don't have to lift it nearly as far. Have you seen the new high lift?

I carry the hi-lift and the bottle. I look at the hi-lift as having purposes other than just to change a tire.

    This!

I carry a "single ended" (what's what I call it) ratchet strap. It is perfect for weaving under the axle and between the frame for the axle to lift early w/o cranking the body way up to get the wheel off of the ground.

A lot of what Ronny says makes sense, for Western Australia. I am a supporter of his. What he has taught me is to carry a bottle jack on top of my hi lift. I now carry a 48" extreme in place of the 60".

I carry both a bottle jack - which I use for typical jack uses - and a hi-lift which I use for all sorts of non-jack applications. If had to choose one - I would choose the bottle jack. But before I had a winch, the hi-lift works as a great come-along. With the winch, it can also make a pretty good dead-man anchor to pull from if there is nothing else (at least for my light CJ), can be helpful with getting a tire on/off rim etc.

I also think each of us, based on where we typically wheel and what vehicle we drive, may dictate specifics of that list. Always good to see and discuss what other decide to carry and why.

I'm going to mount my hilift on my trailer, most of the time I have that with me when I'm wheeling. I've had the same hilift on three rigs over 14 years and have used it twice, once on my Jeep and once on someone else's. Both times I could have used the Toyota bottle jack, it has good reach. That's just my experience, and I also have a winch and accessories, strap, shovel, all the usual stuff. No doubt it's useful, and I'll likely need it the first time I go out without it.

I have a bag of bolts in my kit, every bolt has nuts and most have washers. Lots of different sizes, I've been adding to it for years. I have to say I'm surprised at how butch his tool set is, most guys I know and me are a little anal about this stuff, his stuff looks like he hit a yard sale on the way over...

For attaching the axle to the frame I carry a piece of thick chain about 3-4' long and a grade 8 bolt with washers and a nut that fits through the links. You can put it on hand tight before you jack up, and I've used it to strap a wrench to a straightened tierod that developed a crack where it bent, the wrench was like a truss. You can wrap the chain around two things and tighten the bolt to really clamp down.

I mounted my highlift in the garage about 5 years ago... Haven't missed it. Might someday but haven't yet!

I still carry my high-lift. I have used it a lot the last few years to repair gates for the forest service when we do volunteer work. I have never used it to change a tire, I carry a bottle jack for that.

I used mine for pulling two posts and that is really it's wheel house. The best part is no real weight is on the jack, you're fighting the dirt to pull a light post. When that handle kicks up with the weight of a ehicle on it it's scary, but with the fence post it's nothing.

That's why I kept the 60. Might need it on my Land when I finally get it.
