    Default Another Denver XJ

    Hi folks,
Figure I would join up after meeting another member in a parking lot a few weeks back. My power steering pump blew up at like 1:30 AM and I pulled into a parking lot to wait for a tow (pump blew the shaft out of the front seal so the pulley wasn't attached any more = no more water pump)

Anyways, out of nowhere - another XJ swoops in to make sure I'm OK. I think he mentioned he was on this forum or I saw a sticker on his rig - but either way, I have a few questions about an up-coming re-gear and I figure this would be a good place to ask.

Anyways, I usually commute to Boulder from the Highlands area in Denver, but really I'm all over. Hope to get the rig ready and see some of you on the trail once it warms up a bit more
(and once I fix all the junk thats still broken on my XJ )

    Welcome to the group!

Pictures, yes we appreciate the pictures. And thanks for the pump explaination on why you couldn't drive as it was the immediate question on my mind.

Yup, thats my area! I don't have a garage so you might catch me working on it....constantly

The Grabber AT2's have been really good - comfy on the highway and just fine off road. Only gripe is in 33x12.5 size, my light XJ just doesn't have the weight on hard-packed snow and stuff. Wants to just skate around

    Thanks for the welcome guys!

I actually think I am going to move up to 35's. I just re-geared and apparently I suck at math because none of my calculations match up to what I thought they would (RPM/Speed/Gear).
So I went up to 4.88's without really considering the ramifications, and now I find myself having too much gear

So alas, I think I will be trimming a bit more in the front, and doing some sort of high-clearance chopped rear quarters (no comp cut yet though). Plus bumpstops

I did that with the gears too. I knew I was going to 35s but took over a year to get my tires after gears. I was running 31s. Could chirp the tires shifting into second but couldn't go above 65.

How many RPMs when you are cruising on the highway?

Right now, I am sitting close to 2800rpm at 65mph, and 75 is just under 3000 rpm

Hopefully the 35's will bring my cruise rpm at 75 down to 2800 rpm

I used this calculator to check MPH against RPM with gear and tire ratios, and it is definitely underrated considerably in my circumstance
    http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

The math was showing 2550 RPM @ 65 and I am actually closer to 2800 RPM (but I'll double check against the GPS next time I am on the highway)
