Do you have a preference? I was planning to just go brush/roller given the sheer amount of area I'm needing to cover. Where are you purchasing it?

The spray is easier to get thin even coats. The brush goes on thicker but it kind of self levels and the brush marks go away. Since the spray goes on thinner it dries a little faster but it still takes several days to fully cure. I have been buying it at Ace Hardware.

Come to think of it, it makes a lot of sense to get those diff covers right now so I can paint them at the same time. It's going to be pretty amusing how well armored the bottom of this otherwise stock Rubicon is going to be.

It looks like this is sold under the Kils brand at Ace Hardware. I've seen a few people mention it for restoring vintage machinery as a very durable finish. Is this the same stuff? What's your experience been like with it? Seems like I'll have to order a couple quarts."

Hoolingan Makes a great product! I'm hoping to get their XJ skid plate someday.

I've been with a stock JKUR on Rose Garden Hill outside of Moab that was turtled out on the Rose Garden Hill obstacle. Front tires free spinning in the air with very little weight on the rears.

Although he ended up driving out of it and was totally fine, more protection is better than not enough.

So... I started sanding the mill scale off with 60 grit last night.

I'm picking up some muriatic acid on the way home.

I did wind up getting two quarts of Hammerite Black. I've got everything I need to get the skids on, the fumoto valve in, and the diff covers on. Should be a weekend full of wonderful smells, although I'll probably give the skids a full week to dry before trying to mount them. But everything else can be ready.

As it turns out I was overly ambitious with my plans this weekend. I was able to strip the mill scale off with some muriatic acid, which was still not a grand time, but it did get the job done and only left me with some light rust that was way easier to clean off before cleaning everything with a ton of alcohol.

All parts are painted, it's not perfect, but it's good enough for something I'm going to beat the **** out of. I was reading about the final cure of hammerite taking for ever... so I'm thinking about getting a space heater in the garage to keep it a bit warmer at night, I'll just have to work on the ventilation so I don't blow the garage up.

It lists the final cure as 14 days, which really doesn't work with my schedule, but hey... that's what you get when you don't read every detail.

That is the weirdest paint I've ever used... it's a bit like painting with glue, super vicious, yet somehow, also extremely runny... lol.

Here's hoping that the moisture in the air from the upcoming rain helps the cure.

I do still need to coat the inside of the crossmember. I'm going to wait until it's a bit harder and then just plug as many holes as I can with bolts, tape over the rest, and pout in the remaining hammerite and roll it around for a few hours, then pour out the excess. Hopefully that works....

I'll probably swap the diff covers and get the fumoto on in the next week once I can reposition the plates in the garage, or maybe even put them on the back porch. The plates aren't being installed until this finish is rock hard, they're just too damn heavy to risk it.

The bucket clearly wasn't going to work for the longer parts, but for the crossmember and gastank skid I did have an underbed tub that fit them (mostly) and made it a lot easier.

The art of levitation... Bailing wire, arborist ropes, hitches and pulleys hung off some nylon webbing. I probably should have just done the sides a week apart... but... that's not what I did.

It's a pretty neat finish. It reminds me of a bowling ball.

I do have a welding question.

I want to put some reinforcement plates on my control arm brackets before I beat them too bad this summer...

I was thinking about getting a welder. I have VERY limited experience welding and to be honest it was all TIG and it was all on aluminum. I was being watched closely by a great guy who knew exactly what was going on.

That said, I was thinking about getting a multi function welder (Mig/Tig/Stick) that was also dual voltage because I rent, and who knows what I'll have access too.

I can always whip together and extension cord and swap it out for the ove breaker when I really need 220-240V...

My question, for all you welders... can a 120V welder handle things on a Jeep of am I just kidding myself?

I know I'm really close to some really good fabricators, so I have tons of options, but I want to start learning to weld more for myself anyway. LCA skids seems like a reasonable way of doing that without risking life and limb.

Hey Jason, I don't recognize the logo. Whose skid plates did you use? Are you planning to lift your JK or leave it stock height? I'm currently puzzling a JK purchase as the LJ is a bit trying on the interstate and would be a nail biter for me with bigger tires. Not saying I am impatient but guess I am. Thanks Dale

If I'm not mistaken, He bought from Hooligan they are local in Brighten. So you can save on shipping and they are a full bore shop building from mild to wild, they can handle anything you need. Their skids are over kill done very nicely!

    Exactly what David said.

As far as what my plans are for the Jeep overall. I am going to put off a lift as long as possible. I'm sure eventually I will do one... at that point I'll go for the lowest lift with the most articulation that I can get while still having properly valved dampeners. Most of the videos I see of rigs flipping over have guys with super bouncy rigs, I don't really believe that's a coincidence. I'd rather beat on the bottom than the top.

I'm going to armor it first, getting a welder set up and learning is my next order of business, after that I'll probably start working on spare shafts and trail repair, a winch and tire carrier, then a radio and fuel storage.

Thanks for the reply, David. I checked out Hooligan and his stuff looks impressive for JKs and XJs. Interesting that he left out TJs. You were with me the last time I was out so that means I've not gotten around to either putting on bigger tires or steel on the bottom of the LJ. I hope to see you again before this season is over so I can return your bucket .

I like your planning Jason. I thought maybe you would say a 2" lift with 35" tires. Where do you think "lowest lift, most articulation with properly valved dampeners will take you?" And thanks a bunch for this thread .... I've indexed it for my future use. Great ideas here. Incidentally, how much does your Hooligan protection weigh?

It's got to be over 200 pounds. No piece is too heavy, but as a whole is a lot of metal.

I would guess 2.5 to 3 inch. I've looked a lot at metal cloaks lowest gamechangers, but I'm not really sure what I'll do. I will probably do wider 33s when the stock tires are shot, but that can just be a budget boost. There will probably be other options by the time I'm seriously looking.

Dale I'd like nothing more than going exploring with you. The next 3 weeks are going to be very busy (son's graduation mid May) in July the High country trails will open up and they are easy and vista's are beautiful!

They are on, after a weekend on the creeper. I need a taller floor jack, or some sort of secure saddle extension, I will probably build a bolt in saddle extension out of 6 inch steel pipe as an early welding task. I also need a better creeper, but all in due time.

I tightened things down too early, that was my mistake, nothing on this systems should be in any way tightened down until everything is in place. It took a ton of prying and positioning, but it fits pretty well, no vibrations that I've noticed. I think there may be a clunk now and again, but I'll figure it out as more miles go on.

The paint didn't turn out, I got it on too thick with the brush, but that won't matter after the summer.

In the future, anyone considering hammerite, use the spray, or at least thin it down. It is an interesting fluid, thick as all hell when being manipulated, then it runs like crazy. Thinner coats would be much better.

Now, to buff them with granite.

This gave me a flashback to the 1970's!

A local house painter recruited me for a job, had me do grunt work, and some piece work: I painted the hand railings and fixtures with lacquer, "thinned" to a 1:1 ratio "to make it flow (with a brush)."

When I repainted my bicycle, I thinned the paint to the same ratio and brushed three coats. The neighborhood kids thought I sprayed it.
