    Default Ignition Lock Housing Assembly

Lock housing was busted when my son's 2001 XJ was stolen. Picked up a new Lock cylinder, and can slide it in and start the jeep just fine, however with the housing broken, there is nothing to hold the cylinder in, and it comes out just as easy as it slid in.

What are my options here? I haven't found the housing available for purchase yet. Is this something that I can salvage out of a junk yard steering column and use?
How big of a job is it to swap out to a different steering column to fix this? If I fix this, is there a way to protect the column to keep this from just happening again?

    Ideas or options?

    thanks...

Is this maybe what you are looking for? Just did a quick search I don't know if this is a reliable site.

I don't see why you couldn't just take one out of a JY steering column. I know buying steering columns whole can get fairly expensive even from a JY. I've never replaced a steering column but I'd imagine just tickering around with mine it would take a little bit of time but wouldn't be too hard.

Also found this it may be what you are looking for.

I don't know what year the XJ is but this should at least help you track down the right part if this is the part you are looking for.

The answer will probably depend on the year. The XJ used at least 2 or 3 different column designs over the years. I do know early XJ (Saginaw pre -airbag) have columns similar to a YJ and use either a screw or a spring detent inside the housing to hold the lock cylinder from falling out. Beyond that, I'm not much use...

Column swaps are pretty easy usually, but if you want your key to match with your door, you will be tearing into the column anyway. I'd just replace the parts you need (try e-bay if you don't want to pull your own salvage parts)

My 90 YJ saginaw column replacement took me about ?3 hours? end to end.

First time ever tending such a task, but otherwise was fairly straight forward / easy.

If you could tend it by just replacing the cylinder, that seems much easier.

As column pricing was referenced above, I'll fill in detail. Jeeps Unlimited, last summer, had columns for my 90 YJ at $300 non-tilt and $400 Tilt. FWIW

There are a handful of potential donors at the Denver U-Pull; they never seem to have keys. Looks like the complete column is around $40.
