    Default trailer axle question

Hey guys, I got a ford 9 inch that I have a few questions on, I plan to use it as a trailer axle.

I would like to remove the yoke as seen in the pic and seal off with a plate, is this possible?

Do the guts need to remain inside? I am assuming I need to leave everything inside, carrier, axles etc to keep the axles on?

Can I flip the axle since its a vehicle axle, doesn't appear to have a bow?

Thanks in advance, plan to tackle this tomorrow

Never have done one like that but I would assume that you would need to remove the pinion as well, without preload from the yoke that pinion will be flopping everywhere inside and binding. The carrier would remain to provide support to the axles. Flopping it shouldent matter except for the drain(or fill) plug.

Just thoughts, someone who has actually done this may give better advice.

FWIW - my rear D44's cover (or the whole axle) is upside down. When I fill, if I filled to the base of the fill hole it would be over full. I have to somewhat guess where "full" is at - which is an inch or two below the base of the fill hole.

Could the ring gear be un-bolted from the carrier in this axle? If yes, it might be just remove only the ring gear and its bolts and use it. The pinion wouldn't rotate and the remainder would be there to hold the axle ends properly.

Yes to all three. Like TJ said, the pinion gear will have to come out for good, but you can do this without disturbing the carrier.

    Take a lot of pictures!

Trailer axles are so cheap that I'd just buy one and keep/sell the 9".

Now that I've done something else for a few minutes, you will also have to relocate the vent. Remember that the wheel bearings are lubricated by the same oil that lubes the differential.

    Thanks guys,
I did source a 3500 lb trailer axle but I would have to sell this first, its currently on CL for 200 with no hits because it doesn't have posi, if it does not sell I was just going to use it.
As far as the vent hole, is it necessary, can i Just plug it?

Others might chime in - generally, you want it. If you seal it, then as the axle gets used and heats up, the air inside expands and will push against the outer axle grease seals to "burp" and relieve pressure. As the axle cools, the reverse happens. Drilling a new vent should be easy enough.
