Well fellas, did my rear main yesterday, the main cap bearing was pretty bad, lubed er up, put it back together and developed a rod knock on the way home, looks like im down temporarily. Not my idea of a good time but now I have to decide if I want to swap the engine or gwt another stock xj and swap everything, so infortunatley, il have to be counted out. Did rear mains on all my 4.o and never had this issue.

That sucks, My XJ has a horrible knock too. It had it when I bought it. It happens at about 2k-2.5k rpms. Some day I want to swap a new short block. But will drive it till it dies for now.

I'm still down for the run.

Sorry to hear that Victor, you should hear my 22RE with 350,000 miles on it .

I am still a possible go. Really want to try out the new D60 on some easy stuff to make sure it is all adjusted correctly. Doing some other work to it and with luck I will wrap it up today.

I have a lead on a stock xj with no title, same exact jeep, manual trans and all so im gonna try to swoop that up tonight, and move forward with the next rig if all works out. Just going to swap my lift and tires etc, and scrap my shell. As far as the knock goes on my current one, it is between 2-3k im sure I can drive it but dont want it to go out on the trail.lol, especially since it was fine til i did the rear main. Its so wierd ive done so many of these with no issue, but that main cap bearing was pretty wore out.. Must not have liked being disturbed

If your working on a high mileage engine it's generally a bad Idea to disturb the bearings.
Do a seal hear and there but leave the bearings alone.

So you say this other xj has no title???
    That could be an issue.
Depends on what is going on with the thing when the vin is checked.
Sounds to me like it's a better Idea to move the engine and then keep the rest of what you want then scrap the no title shell.

Sorry to hear you won't make it.

I will still be there for the folks that want to go.

Trust me, I really want to but I want to make sure everything is kosher before I hit a trail like that. It's better to get towed out of Cedar mtn. area that down in the boulders if the axle decided to fly off the truck. One major thing is I need to get it twisted up to make sure my hydro clears panhard mount. Not to worry, Penrose is on the "for sure" list this year.

I would like to still get out. I also would consider taking a drive to China Wall to check out whether it is off limits?. I really think it is the best place for the anniversary run.

This noise sounds as if it may be coming from the head, any ideas?almost sounds like a bearing, like a slight knock between 2-3k when revving up down or staying steady in that area

Mine has always made that noise. I have drove it for four years with the same noise. (bought that way) I have had mine for four years and so far it has not let me down. Just for peace of mind I would like to put a new short block but I only use mine for playing so once I am using it for longer travel I will wait to do anything about it.
