Default new 2017 JK in the family

well, our Subaru decided to take a crap on us in between Omaha & Lincoln on Sunday while we were on our way back from Thanksgiving vacation. this is the 2nd time the engine has managed to eat 5qts of oil in less than 2000 miles, leaving us stranded. luckily, we owned the car, so we decided to just buy a new vehicle. we've been planning on buying a JKU for a while now, but weren't planning on doing it until this next summer. but hey, Christmas came early...

we went with the Crystal Granite color as it's completely awesome and hard to find. S-package with auto windows & locks, upgraded stereo, 17" aluminum rims, TrackLoc rear dif & tinted windows. granted, we really just wanted the color, but this was what they had on the lot. and when you're stranded 600 miles from home, you take what you can get!

so now we're a Jeeps-Only family. my wife is stoked. BB/Leveling kit in the plans & BFG KO2s in 32" flavor for upgrades. and hoping to pick up some Rubicon rocker guards to get rid of that ugly view from the side.

Not much around between Omaha and Lincoln - and much less west of Lincoln!

You purchased the Jeep _on_that_trip_ / when the subi died?

    Color looks nice!

What does the TracLoc rear dif do? Full lockup? What does it use - electric?

It is a mechanical limited slip differential. It does not fully lock.

Disagree. In a TJ traditional brakes it's not as effective as a new Jeep with traction control, but when they're new they are a solid, traditional clutch-type limited slip. They're not lockers, but they're not junk. My LJ came with one, I put a true-trac in the front shortly after and it was a good combo for about 5k until I burned up the rear at the sand dunes and replaced the diff. Here's a rebuild video, the components look decent to me, and the carrier looks like it's got a lot more bulk to it than an open one. I'm straight up jealous, that is a gorgeous Jeep!!

And there is the issue with the Trac lock....they dont last for long.
Moose has around 80k on his and it's the longest last christler Trac lock I have heard of.
Our trucks at work can't seem to keep one for more than 2 services= 20k miles.
The true track from Detroit will last far longer than that.

I do agree that some of the traction features on the JK are nice to have.
Yet the ability turn things off when off-road is the best part of it.

"Dana Spicer has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of differentials and differential parts by constantly making improvements. Being aware of the shortcomings of the Trac-Lok locker, and the high cost and low OEM demand of the Powr-Lok locker, Dana has made several improvements to the Trac-Lok design over the past ten years. The cases have been beefed up and are now much meatier and made of stronger metal. The spider gears are now produced from a much stronger steel than was used for earlier models and the cross pin shaft retention has been improved on models where improvement was needed. The results of these changes have made a much better unit: a limited slip that holds up well when abused by horsepower and tall tires as well as lasting fairly well in many applications."

Dana has made huge improvements in the dana44 thus the bigger ring and pinion in the JK.
Hope the improvement in the Trac lock makes it worth putting it in the jeep.

thanks guys. yeah, the trackloc was already on the Jeep, so we took it. better than open when it comes to snow, IMO. we had one in our old TJ and it even worked well off-road to some extent. not a locker by an means, but still nice to have!

and yes, we got our Jeep in Lincoln, on our trip home. only 1 Jeep dealership in Lincoln and they had to go to Iowa to get the Jeep since they didn't have this color on their lot.

Trac lock is better than open for sure.

gonna update this a little. the Tax Man was good to us for once, so we dropped a little on the new JK to prepare it for Moab.

pile-o-parts includes 33" Falken Wildpeaks, new front bumper, new rock sliders, spacers, & 2" leveling kit.

the lift was pretty easy to get on. took me about 2.5 hours by myself in my driveway. and my impact battery died just before I finished the last corner, haha. so not bad at all.

    tire size comparison

    before the lift

    and after:

and here's an updated shot vs stock:

rides pretty much like stock. not really any noticeable power loss since the tires are only an inch or so larger. but the looks have improved immensely, and I"m sure it will make a difference off-road. overall, I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

now to test it in two weeks in Moab!
