    Default Road Trip

Barb & I are on a road trip figuring I might be laid up a while after surgery and take advantage of the good weather. Today we're in Flagstaff and decided to hit a trail, found one close by and within a minute had a flat. Not real happy about that since lifting my spare in June is what blew out my back. After deciding not to be stupid I aired the flat and headed to town. It took a few fills with one being in a very bad traffic area where a cop pulled up behind us and turned on his lights. Nice guy, he offered to escort us as we limped to Discount but told him we had the air tank and could make it.

We did w/o damaging the rim only of find we had a nail in another tire and we knew the tread on all were getting thin. The decision on whether they'd make it through the Winter was made for us. I'm now running BFG KO2's and will never run DuraTracs again - 4 sidewall failures suck and so do Duratracs.

$1,000 lighter we hit the trail and finished off the day. I suppose the good news is that it didn't blow at 80 on the freeway and now that we have good rubber just may stay away longer!

Glad you got back on the road without injury. Be careful in AZ if you have CO plates. My buddy pulled to the shoulder to change a flat and a cop pulled up to "help". When the officer stated that he smelled marijuana. After proceeding to search his vehicle and belongings... Two hours later, the officer gave up and left without even waiting for my friend to repack his truck.

I've heard of that happening to other people but we've driven from CO to TX to FL without as much as a glance in our direction. I'm not concerned about having my truck searched but it sure would be annoying to have to repack everything. These stories pop up a lot on forums but yours seems to be the first that's verified.

Out of curiosity, what's his age and truck?

There side walls suck to say the least. The duratrac was to solve this...BS

Interesting Brian, the other guy who posted was early twenties and drove a questionably road-worthy Jeep so I wasn't surprised he was stopped.

I had trouble with my previous BFG's which I guess was some transition period where they changed the compound so decided to go with GY. I learned my lesson!

I'm happy to say we were never stopped now that we are back. They wouldn't have much trouble finding something.

The biggest problem we had over the 2800 miles was getting caught in the closure of I-70 last night. We were forced off around Dillon, it was a real mess with lots of crashes so we weren't surprised when it happened. Rather than fight people scrambling for a room for the night we took backroads to Winter Park where we decided to stay after seeing a truck rolled in the ditch just before entering town and knowing we had Berthoud Pass ahead of us. Pretty remarkable what a difference 12 hours can make.

The strange thing we noticed was how few of the big rigs had chains on. Lots of signs/warnings about the condition and laws but I'd say half the big rigs were running w/o their chains. Stupid & dangerous.

Glad you made it home and sorry for the troubles with your Duratracs. After getting a puncture in one of my brand new Duratracs, I'm starting to regret not sticking with my tried and trusted Dynapro's.

Were your duratracs LT rated? Just curious as I have them on my truck, also had them on my 98. Traction on snow is far better than the BFG. I have also been looking at the STT pro.

I agree on the snow traction, but that's compared to the KO I went from to the Duratracs. The KO2 changed the outside tread blocks from "S" shapes to "U" shapes like the Duratrac. I've noticed a lot of the new tires have the Duratrac design, U blocks on the outsides and AT blocks in the center. I would have loved to get the Coopers except they are super expensive and Shane posted the BFGs... that's how I got the Duratracs, Loren aka Hotchef posted them here in 2011 or 12. Check out how tough the coopers are (I believe these use the same construction as the SST Pro with a different tread):

Cooper seems to be working better on some platforms. Given my LR3 is so capable without airing down I have been reluctant to air down unless the trail has difficult obstacles. I am also running around 7k lbs fully loaded.

I think weight is the reason I've not had punctures in my Duratracs. I do almost all of my trail runs with tube doors / bikini top / no rear seat and tires at 15lbs. I only air up to 25, I did the chalk tread thing and that's where the 12.50s laid flattest. My tread wear is even at 30k+. My Jeep weighs around 4500 lbs I'd guess with all the deletions and added trail gear / winch. I do carry two spares because of all the stories I've heard, but I just haven't had a puncture for whatever dumb luck reason. I'm glad to be going to the BFGs, they are the benchmark AT and I'm fully confident going back to just one spare.
