    Default Durango

We're stir crazy so we're taking the travel trailer to Durago for a couple weeks. I assume it's much too early for any wheeling but we'll look anyway. Planning on Mesa Verde, Hovenweep and whatever else we are in the mood for. Anyone have suggestions that are approprite this time of year?

    TIA!

Anything in the mountains is going to still be snowed in. Mesa Verde won't be too busy yet, and Hovenweep is cool. If you want to see some other ruins and want to drive a bit more, Canyon De Chelly in NE Arizona is great. It is about 3 hours SW from Durango and about 2 hours from Hovenweep.

Another place that I have never been to but everyone says is spectacular is Chaco Canyon. It is about 2 hours due South of Durango.

If you have time one direction or the other, I would suggest stopping in the small town of San Luis in Southern Colorado. It is just South of Hwy 160 in the vicinity of the Great Sand Dunes. It is the oldest inhabited town in Colorado, settled by the Spaniards. The Spanish influence is huge in town, there are lots of churches in town, many made of stone, and there is a big one overlooking town. It sort of feels like you went back to the 1950's based on the storefronts when you walk down main street.

Mesa Verde is on the list, Canyon De Chelly may be farther than we want to drive but is a posdibility I hadn't thought of, thanks.

    Chaco Canyon? I'll look now.

I'll check out San Luis, it sounds like a good stop on our drive home.

    Thanks Jeff!

It makes sense but I had to check that Chaco Canyon is the Chaco Cultural Center. We spent a day there last year. It's a fascinating site that I highly recommend.

Forgot to mention Navajo Reservoir. It has cliffs similar to Powell and such. It is about 30 mins South of Durango. Almost certainly too cold to get in the water, but there is camping and it should be quiet there this time of year.

Those look good, quiet is good! Scenic/historical or just plain fun are our goals.

Chaco is way cool, but if the weather is wet, DON'T!!!! Even 4wd would be really iffy. Worst clay/betonite in the world. IMO.

Closer to four corners is the Ute Mtn Tribal Park. I've never been and you have to be accompanied by a guide. From what I've heard its even better than Mesa Verde as far as ruins go.

Have you ever tried Onion Creek in Moab after rain, Tom? I know what you mean though. There had been rain a while before we went so all we had to deal with were the dried ruts.

Thanks, I'll take a look at Ute Mountain Tribal Park.

Do I recall correctly that you lived down that way at one time?

Nope I didn't. My parents lived in Sedona for awhile.

Sedona's a beautiful place, we thought about retiring there at one time. We have a funny story I'll share someday when I see you.
