    Default Show your tire carrier!

Anyone have a unique set up on their tire carrier?
Home made, add ons. Have problems with a store bought carrier?

I just built one for my YJ, i really dontluke the look of the spare out side, but i need the space inside now.
So i built a tire carrier ad allmost finished last night.
I used a locking hub from a 89 dodge ram charger for the hinge, 2x2 tubing, lock from home depot, and a hub flang from an old wheel bearing.

Im really intrested in adding and adapting a a few things to it, like a shelf for a small propane grill, a small table top for preparing food, an extension on the Boom so i can haul some 2x4s or tubing, a cooler holder.
Not really intrested in adding gas cans, hi lift.

What do you have ? Or what have you wanted to do with a tire carrier?

    Looks good to me Adam!

I don't have any handy photos of the tire carrier on my Scout. It was built by D&C Extreme in Colorado Springs though about 15 years ago. I love it because it carriers the tire, 2 jerry cans, hi-lift, and shovel. Very well built but I think they have since changed their design. Nothing on their site looked like the model I have.

I managed to find some older pics of my Scout. The jerry cans hand on eye-bolt type hooks. You can see the hi-lift going across behind the tire. The license plate attaches to the hi-lift. It is a well thought out design. My only complaint is that you can't open the lift gate without swinging out the rack. But it also provides a bit more security since the back does not lock.

Cause JR. wants the back of the Crypt open and the spare no longer fits under the back, He needs in on the roof rack.
Im thinkin about a rear deck ladder / slider and a small Harbor freight winch to lift the spare up.
If youre gona lift a 35 up there ya better be eatin your wheaties..

    Nicely done Adam!

I like that you welded the spindle flange, as opposed to welding the spindle. I have seen more than a few pictures of spindles that snapped at the edge of the heat zone.

My design really is a "tire carrier" but here is what I came up with for my XJ,

I also wanted a propane grill so I bought one at Lowes added 2-1/2" tubes to the sides that are re-moveable, drilled 2-1/2" holes into the bumper then welded tube inserts to prevent water from getting into the tubing. So far it really works well and I don't need a table, with your tire carrier opened might be able to do something similar.

I created an in-Jeep mount about 4 years ago. Since I have zero fab skills, I had someone else weld it together for me. I don't run a back seat, and mounted it high-enough that I could slide my tools and camping gear underneath. It is removable, though I've only removed it once, and that was to bedline the Jeep. Its held up very well with no issues.

    Here's a write-up I posted when I built it:

Very nice steve. Spare placement is killer
Out of the way and only takes 1/2 the space..

mine was on the Jeep when I got it. I've not been able to identify it from a brand standpoint, but it has some nice features:

the mount for the tire can be moved up or down on the swing arm via large bolts on the back. there's a place to mount the CB antenna, and there's also a mount for the high lift jack. the spring/screw/t-handle thing works ok, but lately it's been working its way open when hitting bumps. luckily, the spindle is too tight for it to swing open easily. the spindle also has a zirk fitting for grease. I've greased the heck out of it ever since the day I got it, but the dang thing is crazy tight still. kinda sucks, but I don't have a huge need for swinging it out much.

only thing I've added is frame tie-ins. I got them online somewhere, but the bumper was heavy enough to start pulling at the stock cross member after a while. the frame supports have worked well.

Mine is small and simple but I am thinking about making a few bolt-on accessories that "clamp" on or something, not thought about it too much as I'm not ready to do anything. I will definitely add a table that can be used for a grill, shooting/reloading table, etc. Probably HDPE or aluminum table as the bumper is already heavy.
