8th Annual Turkey Run for Denver Rescue Mission(Homeless Shelter)

This has become an annual tradition for the group. I think this will be the 8th year we have donated! It is always great to see the group join together to support the community.

The idea is to buy a turkey, or several, when they are on sale for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Denver Rescue Mission in downtown Denver needs THOUSANDS of birds, so every bit helps. I will post when birds start appearing in the shopping ads.

In addition the turkeys, the shelter always needs other supplies. This includes canned and dry foods, clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, shoes/boots, hygiene supplies, etc. We have a box in our basement that we gradually put stuff into leading up to the holidays. The items do not have to be new, so this is a great time to clean out your closet. Also a great time to clean out your pantry or freezer! All the donations go directly to homeless people in need (as opposed to selling the items).

In years past a group of us also went to breakfast at which was a great time to relax and mingle with good folks. I would be happy to consider going to breakfast again this year if people are interested.



Anyone have any input as to when this should happen? Typically we shoot for the weekend prior to Thanksgiving (Saturday 11/21 or Sunday 11/23) but we could probably consider the weekend before (Saturday 11/14 or Sunday 11/15).

Most weekends work for me, just no breakfast joints in the down town area parking was good last year and the wait was blah

Thanks to everyone for the input!

We had gone to Denver Diner in the past for breakfast. On the edge of "downtown" at Colfax and Speer. Last year they had a big fire just before the run, so it wasn't an option. Unfortunately last year I was unable to do breakfast. I will see if I can find an option that is close to downtown, but not right in the heart of town.

I believe the diner at Colfax and Speer is open again. Just saw it on the news recently.

The spot last year was on-street parking and had a decently long line. When we were seated we were in separated spots.

Denver diner, has a parking lot, not a vast amount of space, but decent enough. A visit, pre-fire, had all of us at one long table, which was nice (and there was only a 3 to 10 minute wait) - not 20+

Iam up for breakfast at the diner.what is the regular plan?does everyone drive to the mission and drop items off or ?never done this but seems like a good thing to do.

Yep. The basic plan will be to meet up at a central location just on the edge of downtown (typically Pepsi Center). Usually there is time to bs a bit, drink some coffee, and eat some donuts. We all caravan to the shelter and drop off our items. Then those in the group who want to proceed to breakfast go eat.

My work schedule has changed. The only day we can go would be on any Sunday. If needed, I can drop my stuff off with someone else to be delivered.

This sounds great! Will they take a frozen turkey? I have lots of supplies too. I always keep homeless care packages in the car.

Sorry to everyone that the run hasn't been posted. I posted the run, as well as replied to this that it had been posted. Looks like a technical error occurred and the run post didn't take, nor did my update on here. Will get it posted again today.
