    Default New project

We picked up our new project today. Needs some TLC before being road worthy. It was my wife's great grandpa's old Jeep trailer and has set for last 30 years waiting for us. So many ideas of what to do to modify it to suit our needs yet wanting to maintain it's vintage. Plan is to restore it and get it in use first. By then I might have my mind made up of how to xazafy it.

Yeah, good looking trailer. I would put some new tires and lights on it, grease the bearings, and use it.

that is so cool, I looked at two like that last year, neither in close to that condition. You scored! I did learn that if fenders like that measure at 32" at the bottom corners you can use CJ 5 or 7 fender flares to cover wider tires.

The list of upgrades I am pretty sure it is getting are: Lift, double shear shackles, tires comparable in size to Jeep, LED lighting, coupler and skid protection. Was thinking pintle hitch but I really like these
    https://locknroll.com/
Still pretty unsure of other upgrades although we have been leaning toward a tent trailer. For restoration I am going to sand, paint and grease. Will likely replace bearings and pack the old ones to carry as spares. Still a lot more research I have to do, I don't even know exactly what trailer it is.

If I have done my research correctly I have a T3C Trailer made by Bantam post world war 2. Similar to the military T3 but not all the options including waterproof/floating ability. Got a pretty good start today. We pulled the wheels off and flipped the axle giving the trailer about 6" of lift. With original tires on trailer I have about a straight hitch coupling with jeep hitch so might be good with these tires. The tire track is only 48" on trailer versus 60" on Jeep (center tire to center tire). Going to widen the track on trailer to match Jeep. Thinking a couple hanging locking tool boxes might work nice on the sides in front of tire. Pulled the hubs apart, cleaned them out and re-greased bearings and reassembled. Threw in a picture at end for before/after comparison on height.

good deal on the free lift!! That axle looks really beefy too, I bet it can handle some 35s to match your XJ.

What I have found is this trailer is practically all bolt together. I am going to continue this theme with add ons making it easier to revert back so while not maintaining it's vintage, making it possible to return should the next owner choose to. When possible I will clamp things down and minimize the amount of drilling, cutting and welding. I have a little lead way because these were utility trailers that were made in various versions to meet specific needs of those using them.

We were shocked how beefy it was. The bearings were way bigger than the ones NAPA had in their trailer spot. For now I think I am going to stick to about the same size tire it has because I have the hitch angle where I wanted it. Eventually I may change out springs to drop trailer down and increase tire but we will see if I need the bigger tires before increasing the drag on XJ.

Thank you, it really is, we have not found one spot where rust looks bad enough to be patching. Will likely get it to Blast Tech this week to strip it clean and will know for sure.

Wylie needed another project huh? That is sweet Cliff! You can always modify the hitch coupler to accommodate the lift/tire situation too.

I set the trailer on the back of the truck to get an idea of where I set. With a 1" drop bar it was sitting pretty close to level but we have decided we want to bring the trailer down and widen it's stance so I opted for a 2.25" drop.
The length of the tongue was not quite long enough to clear tire carrier so I set it about where I wanted and took some measurements with trailer slightly turned into tire carrier. I liked it with about 16" extension and found what I needed in a 15" with some modification.
I started by removing the 1 7/8" coupler which went smooth and easy. The rear bolt for coupler also holds safety chains and will be reused. I had an adapter which I believe will work well but will also give me the opportunity to do some welding. Will need to make tabs to extend to rear hole like the ones on old coupler and would like to sleeve it. This will give me a 2" receiver on trailer.
Got my boxes in the mail today and set trailer on truck to have a look. I am liking things so far. Trailer is going to be coming down 2" or so. Haven't decided if I want to drill new holes in brackets or make some new brackets since they bolt in place.
