Default Tincup Pass / Hancock Pass / Pomeroy Lakes

Saturday Sept 6 for trails; I want to head down into the area on Friday, the 5th and camp along the start of the Tincup Pass trail. The Wells book indicates some great dispersed camping along this road just after the town of St. Elmo http://www.everytrail.com/guide/tincup-pass-4x4-road

Saturday morning I'd like to go over Tincup Pass, loop down Cumberland Pass to Hancock Pass, and check out Pomeroy Lakes on the way back to camp. None of this is hard, but it's full of ghost towns and mining history.

Here's a great set of videos that have some of these trails in them. The second video is basically the run, they even camp along the road I'm thinking of:

Cumberland Pass is 2wd. You might want to look into Napoleon Pass instead. It leaves out of tincup cemetery. Goes past an amazing mine complex east and parallel to Cumberland.

Napoleon Pass (FS Rd 765N): http://www.4x4explore.com/rds/n_rds/napoleon_ps.html

Old Gold Cup Mine (FS Rd 765J): http://www.everytrail.com/view_pictu...ure_id=6358509 and http://www.trailbehind.com/Old%20Gold%20Cup%20Mine. This tops out at the summit of Cumberland Pass. I've not found any trail info though.

If you decide to include it I might run down for a long day and join you. Been camping up there already this year and my gear is worn out.

There is great camping above St Elmo on the tincup pass road. Run these two several times. Never done Napolean. Dying to run it.

Interesting. I can't say yes, I don't know enough about it but it sure looks good. Might be a good group decision on the day of the run. My wife is coming along, and my old fat dog, so I promised her I'd keep it easy. I'll google it and run it past her. We've done Tincup Pass and Cumberland in our old FJ60, they were both easy, but we turned to Gunnison instead of Hancock on that trip so I've never done Hancock. Or Pomeroy, which looks more challenging in places. IDK but I do like it...

Barb and I have been talking about a couple days there so we might be able to join you. I agree with Tom that Cumberland is an easy dirt road but there's nothing wrong with that along with the others. I really like Hancock and Tin Cup even though we've done them numerous times. I'm just not sure we can wait until September since we've missed a whole lot of wheeling due to moving. Gotta make up for lost time!

According to 4x4 explore Napoleon is the same difficulty as Hancock.

Found some videos of Napoleon Pass, it looks more like an ATV trail through the woods. I think we'll "pass" for this run

FJ40 flopped on its side at 3:15. I think it might be better to run it the way these guys do, Hancock / Cumberland / Tincup instead of the reverse. Any thoughts?

I look forward to your report Paul! Last year I sliced a tire in Devil's Punchbowl, hoping not to repeat that!

Yes it is a dirt road but as of 4th of july weekend it is the roughest dirt road I have been on. Tin cup only opened like a week or two ago. Classes permitting I may be able to tag along.

It did. There was chest deep snow on Tincup and Hancock in Feb.

last time I did it was in 2004 or 5, had my FJ60 then. Tincup and Cumberland were no problem at all, but it sure was beautiful. Here's Cumberland Pass and the BonTon mine.

Hancock has a few tough spots but no obstacles. Wish I could, September is just too busy for us this year.

Wish you could too!! Maybe next time.

This is optional, but looks fun, probably the toughest thing available on that run. It's Old Tincup Pass, runs off Tincup Pass.

Since there were no YES' yet and Jim says the back way to the Sand Hills is open, I'm switching this run to the North Sand Hills.
