Default Anybody know anything about VW Bugs?

Specifically performance mods? I have a friend who has a '60 something bug with a 2100 cc motor and dual webbers. It runs, but poorly and way rich, and won't pass emissions. He had it a shop a few years ago and they told him that it just needed a good set of performance heads and it would run like a stripe @$$d ape. He is pretty non technical and asked me for help in tuning it up. We are planning on pulling the motor and putting new seals/gaskets throughout and replacing the heads. Anybody have any idea where to start on selecting heads/cams for it?

Make sure the carb is adjusted correctly first. I haven't owned a bug in a while, but with a 2100, this car should scream, even without mods.

"Me too" - start (and possibly end) with the carbs.

There are a couple VW bug owners on here that should chime in. I had a bunch of bugs in the past and will go along with the guys and say it's the carbs and getting duals working together can be a b*tch from what I remember.

This, although it was a 1967 Volvo, not a VW.

We have a 72 super with a 1915 and dual webbers. First off, good ngk iridium spark plugs. New larger high performance spark plug wires. Make sure the timing is spot on, even a little advance. Depending on what heads it has I would not worry about them quite yet. Was it a turnkey motor or did he make his a 2100?

We currently have very small jets in our carbs and it still seems like we still get to much gas. After doing the tune up which included all new ignition, distributor, coil, plug wires, spark plugs, timing, and an oil change; it ran much better! It feels like a little race car.

Im also pretty sure that he doesn't have to do emissions if he buys collector plates. The webbers are defiantly a PITA to tune and work on, but it is defiantly rewarding, you get massive torque and good hp thought the rpm range, and there is a good rpm range. We hit 6000 on a daily basis.

Thanks for the input guys. He bought the car as is so we don't know much about the motor. I guess the first step will be to pull the motor and give it a good tune up and re-seal. We will also pull the heads and measure the bore and stroke to confirm the displacement. It's been sitting for 7-8 years since he bought it so it needs some work.

The car already screams, it just needs more TLC then he is able to do.

Unless rules changed in the last couple years it will have to get emission tested. If the vehicle passes and you go for collectors plates it is good for the lifetime of your ownership. No more emission tests. Once the vehicle sells and is transferred again the next person will have to emission test. I had collectors plates on my CJ5. It barely squeaked through. Registration was good for 10 years.
