I don't know... You have such AWESOME chains I can't imagine why you would need a winch!

Seriously, I had a winch on the YJ and I have one on the TJ. They are worth their weight in gold! I wish I had a winch plate to sell you! Sadly, I do not!

    Good luck!

Hey, traction is THE equation in wheelin'! You did do great on the New Year's Day run!

When you do get the winch plate and start wiring the winch, let me know if you need a hand. I have a crimp tool to do the lugs that does a GREAT job! I am more than happy to let you borrow it (or just help you with wiring it) of you need it! Just let me know!

Just FYi, I have a fairly string electrical/electronics background. I also did the winch on the YJ that I owned with my son with a vise and solder. Embarrassing! It worked like a champ though! I winch Geno out for many, many hours, and it worked fine, but a proper crimp tool really makes a difference. I would be glad to help when you get ready to wire it!

IMHO, go for "welding wire" in #2. Very flexible and on the verge of overkill, but the cost difference is trivial! Drop me a note if you want/need a hand when you get ready to wire it!

I tend to overbuild most things. When I wired mine in I used #2 wire. I believe that most winches will put you in the #4 or #2 AWG range. The #2 is bigger and therefore will drop less voltage when there is a big load on it and therefore heat up less. I went here: http://wesbellwireandcable.com/Welding/Welding2.html and got some #2 welding wire. (Not sure if it is the cheapest, but close enough for me.) It appears that the welding wire is rating for carrying a higher current due to the harsh environment it is intended to be used in. Welding wire (as opposed to standard battery cable) is more flexible, so it is easier to handle.

My neighbor, Geno, recommended putting in a disconnect plug under the hood so that the winch is not always hot. Look at: http://www.quadratec.com/products/72006_37.htm You pay a little for the Warn name in that example. Our local shop sells another brand that is (I am pretty sure) plug compatible for maybe 1/3 less or so (???). I liked that idea, so I have put those plugs in for both of the winches that I have installed. You'll notice that they handle #2 and #4, so that partially drives the decision to go with #2 (the heaviest duty cable the connector will take). I suspect this is a pretty standard arrangement, but that is a bit of a guess. Now I know Geno is talking about a winch setup that he hopes to build this year that will go in the 2" receiver in the rear of the vehicle. He will put a long cord and one of those connectors on the end. I guess I am saying that it might be a handy thing to have one of those connectors in case you someday have the need to use such a setup! (There was one time I wish I had such a setup!) Before a trail run we plug in the winch while everyone is airing down.

Anyway, that's just a couple of my thoughts on the matter for whatever it is worth!

I commute between here and (roughly) Fort Collins every week and a half or so. Let me know when you are about ready to do this and I'll drop the tool by. Denver isn't even that bad really, so I could even drive up when you are ready. Just drop me a note and let me know.

Agreed! Got mine from Buckeye Welding Supply for not too much money. Nice flexible outer insulation which makes it easy to route around stuff under the hood.
