No takers...I am planning on going. This race is the national finals and should be exciting. The rigs participating look like Ultra4 buggies and the location seems very cool. I will try to take some cool pictures...
If I don't have work I am totally down to going with you. I've always wanted to go to one of those, and the Grand Nationals seem like the best ones to hit with the hardest course and the best competitors.
Cool. As it gets closer we should make some plans if you dont have to work. I have a couple of friends that said they are going as well and we could all carpool.
I am more than likely in. New to run it past the boss first.
Which day were you thinking of going or was the plan to stay the night and hit both days? I'd probably prefer Sunday (day 2) since they have the final shootout that day too but might be down for trying to find somewhere down there to camp or something.
edit: I don't know why I thought this, but thought Cortez was in the Southeast corner of the state, but its down closer to Durango. Since its such a long ways down there, its definitely worth spending a few days at it and maybe leaving the day before. Google shows it as about a 7 hour drive for reference. Carpool sounds like a good plan, and I will volunteer my car to drive down there since it will better mileage then a truck but can still carry gear and people.
edit#2:
Looking further, google is showing that driving down I-70 and through Moab is the same drive time as driving up 285 and through Gunnison and such, so it might be a good thing to combine with some trail runs if ya'll have the time spend a fewa day or two on both sides of this trip. We could even make it interesting and do stuff like Black Bear Pass on the way there and Moab on the way back or vice versa. Obviously that means driving multiple rigs though, but I would be ok with that if it meant running some fun trails.
All great ideas, but I'm out.
Adam, we run WeRock and DirtRiot so i'll probably see you there
Josh,
I dont know which day would be better to spectate but I always enjoy the qualification rounds for the finals. There is usually more competitors and they go all out to make the finals. That being said, it is a long drive and would be worth staying down there and maybe catching both days.
I have the wife's 4 runner that is good for road trips as well. I saw that the 285 route was a little faster...if you get lucky with traffic.
Matt,
What class do you run? What do you drive in the competition? I guess you will have your own cheering section...
I went to the races in Moab last spring and had a blast watching the races. Wish i could get down there to see them.
The 285 route is marginally faster according to Google, or rather its shorter distance. I think the I-70 route through Moab is long but since its mostly on the interstate its about the same time to drive. Either way, its gonna be a 7 hour drive each way give or take, so to me it would be silly to try and do that all in one day.
Looking at the format, there should be enough people competing both days to make it interesting, since both days count towards the finals as far as I could tell. The Ultra4 race in Utah that many people were doing a double hit on was cancelled due to a failure in the negotiations for land use with an Indian Reservation, but I'm not sure if that means more people or less people will show up for this event. Oh, and FYI to people, this isn't racing per se (i.e. different from the Moab or RAM Offroad events), its the technical rock crawling competition or "Cone Dodging", which hasn't really been seen in Colorado for a while, and this being the National finals, they really crank up the difficulty level for it so it should be very cool.
I wouldn't mind hitting a trail or two, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if we just drove down for the event either. I WOULD prefer to go for both days if we are gonna do it though. I'm a night owl, so I'd be fine with driving overnight on the 27th and just find a place to crash nearby, and then go to the event on both comp days. The event is over around 3pm on the second day, so we could either head home afterwards or cruise to Moab or Ouray and find a place to camp, then do a trail or two on Monday and head home (this would be my preference, but like I said it would mean driving two vehicles).
Sounds like we are on the same page Josh. Except I do not think that I can get Monday off work. Both days sounds good and Im ok with driving there and back overnight if needed.
It sounds like I may only have 1 other person riding with me so it wont be a big group. Im excited anyway, should be a great show!
Adam, I Co-Drive for Olympus Offroad, we will be running every class there is by next year, im in the 4500 class
So, wouldn't you know it, but I just got a call to work on the 29th, so I may be out for both days. I'm still deciding whether its a good plan to drive that far for just one day or not, so I guess I have moved to a maybe on this now. I'd still really like to go, but if I take the gig it starts at 9am and I'll need to be relatively awake/coherent for it, so getting home after midnight after spectating and driving all day might not be a great thing. I'm tempted to say that I can't make it for work (Freelance...so that doesn't REALLY get me fired) but the slow season is coming up so I really should work it.
I'll let you know what I decide though.
No worries Josh. Skinny Fab an I plan on going so if you can make it let me know.
Would this be worthy of adding to the Calendar? I am going to try and make it I am curious how many others will be going from the Site? I am trying to enlist a buddy of mine to join the site and also head down to this event. I will likely either camp for the weekend or get a hotel.
Not sure if it can go up on the calendar, it does not technically qualify as a "run" but perhaps more people would see it...
PM me if you end up going Josh, Ill give you my number. We have our tickets and will be staying for both days, probably camping since we have not got out as much as we wanted this summer.
Yea I wasn't sure about adding it to the calendar since it isn't technically a wheeling trip. However if a group from the site goes down it can still be considered a FrontRange4x4 event, at the very least it could generate additional interest? Anyway I will be sure to let you know if I end up going, trying to work some things out to make room for it this weekend. I didn't know anything about it until I stumbled across this thread.
Bump!
I'm still up in the air on whether I am going on this. I have always wanted to attend one of these events and I really want to go, but I'm also apprehensive to drive for 14 hours for less then 6 hours of the event. I'm leaning towards not going, mostly because I have work at 9am on Sunday, so getting home late would be less then ideal for that. I also have obligations at home that I've been shirking due to work, so it might smooth the way not to go on this.
