"Since I live in Berthoud, to get to Estes via the recommended route would require driving south about an hour before heading up I-70 to take the long route up the peak-to-peak highway. I expect it's about four hours. I already learned of another route that will cut an hour off of that trip time. Since US 36 and US 34 are both devastated, I would not expect them to be open for quite a while. I heard that only two bridges are out on 7, West of Lyons, but I would be surprised if even that is open before Christmas. I don't know about the road up Big Thompson Canyon. Some people are even suggesting it should be abandoned.
So, what about Pole Hill Road? It's listed in a lot of the trail guides as a 4x4 road. I think it used to be a main route between Loveland and Estes, back before they opened a road up the Big Thompson Canyon in 1904. When things dry out a bit, why not offer to take a few people up there and maybe even fix it up a bit?"

I could be wrong but I believe that old portion crosses private land and is fenced off.
